Noticed today that the grabber arm for the records hits the tone arm when it removes the records from the platter to put them back in the mech. The reason appears to be that the tone arms does not retract far enough to the right when it retracts. Is there an adjustment for this? Thanks.
Cheers,
Ray

Hi Ray,

You need to check that the tone arm cam is adjusted as per the manual, check out the picture on the top of page 3-9 in the R-91 manual and suggest that you also look at 3-13.

Finally got around to checking everything and all measurements and adjustments check out. Conducted adjustments as indicated in the manual on the pages you mentioned, but when returning, the grabber arm still hits the head of the tone arm (black part) slightly. It's enough that you can see the tone arm jump as the grabber returns the record.

I can adjust the horizontal distance more and that fixes the issue, but then some records (not all) won't play because the stylus hits the edge and not in the play groove. Any other thoughts?
Thanks.
Cheers,
Ray

Look inside the recessed area of the tone arm cam. There is a plastic leaf in there mounted with a screw that gently moves the tone arm to its final position. Most likely that piece of plastic has broken. http://www.jukeboxparts.com/IMG_3868.JPG If that plastic piece alone is no longer available and you don't want to buy a complete new cam, I'm thinking a cheapskate like me could resize that image to match what's left of the broken one and cut a new one from something like a plastic snapon lid from a tube of Pringles chips.

Nope, that little plastic piece is there and in good shape. The tone arm sets down nice, it just doesn't seem to be setting down far enough to the left so when the grabber arm returns, it hits the tone arm on its way up.

With the mech in standby position and power off, if you rotate the camshaft by hand just a bit in the direction that moves the tone arm out of the way, does that help? If so, take a look at the microswitch that serves the transfer motor. It may be opening a tad too early. Also take a look at the linkage between the motor and the camshaft to see if it has a lot of slack in it. With the power off, it doesn't hurt anything to rotate the camshaft by hand, just don't overdo it in the wrong direction. Just be careful poking around when the power is on, that tiny motor is geared up enough to take a finger off.

Hi Ray,

Your problem is down to adjustments on the tone arm collar/tone arm cam.

Thanks Alan - any thoughts as to how to adjust? Again, I checked it and it is adjusted per the manual. The picture on the page looks just like my cam when it is adjusted. Thanks.

Ray

Hi Ray,

You need to check that the tone arm cam is adjusted as per the manual, check out the picture on the top of page 3-9 right hand side in the R-91 manual and suggest that you also look at 3-13.

If you tone arm cam/tone arm lifting pin is not correct as per the picture, you need to loosen the allen screws locking the collar on the shaft to make the adjustment correct.

does the tone arm lift high enough, or just not clear the gripper bow?

The tone arm lifts high enough, it just doesn't return fast (far) enough so that when the grabber arm comes up hit hits it. I'll try and take a vid this weekend to show what it's doing. Thanks again for all the help.
