While searching the threads for some leads on my missing engines sounds, I ran across someone mentioning adding the "missing" sounds from Atari's Poleposition by socketing 9A, 8A, and 8C and burning the eproms... where are those files found? Just from the Namco version and slapping them in?

Which files go to what positions?

I found an internal Atari memo about the boards and removing those chips... seems like they were labeled PP2 12, 13 and 14... in the MAME image for Namco Pole Position there are 3 files labeled PP1 12, 13, and 14.

They check out as Namco and bootleg only in RomIdent... so something tells me those are the ones I'm looking for.

I can only imagine they go on the boards as 107, 108, and 109 in 9A, 8C, and 8A.

I guess there's only one way to find out, right?

found it in the mame sources.

CPU 2E PP1-11 <-- CPU 9C 136014-106 or 136014-147 <--
CPU 2F PP1-12 <-- CPU 9A 136014-108* *
CPU 1E PP1-13 <-- CPU 8C 136014-107* *
CPU 1F PP1-14 <-- CPU 8A 136014-109* *

Burned them and checked them... works fine. Added some voices and crowd cheering. In the test menu they're listed as sound 0. "Motorsportsuwa"

So... now I have extra sounds, but I'm still missing the engine noise. lol Oh well..

Video of the sounds (and me rambling): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YNSCe7xRUk

Interesting video. I remember seeing that memo somewhere, and wondered why it took 3 eproms for that little bit of sound, bit I guess BITD digitizing sound wasn't as easy as today.

I've been practicing to see how the sounds are handled in the game... but I still REALLY suck at the game. I think the extra noise is just where the test screen routine is calling up the whole block of sounds and the gibberish in between the two recognizable sounds is where it's reading the misc. stuff in the ERPOMs as one continuous sound file... no idea.

But, yeah, the sounds on this board are crazy... custom ICs to handle every other sound, a custom IC controlling those, etc etc etc... it's a mess. But, BITD, I guess it was all they could do.
