I got an offer to trade my addams family for a nice LOTR. Assuming both are equal quality, would you do it?

Personally, I am torn. I like both pins, probably LOTR a bit more right now. However, I just don't feel those Sterns hold their values or have as large of a market to resell/trade as the williams/bally do. This may be opinion, sure, but in my experience selling a lot of pins I have not had much luck selling or trading off those sterns too easily.

Thoughts?

depends on how nice your addams fam is
how much you want to keep it
how bad you want the LOTR
how nice is the LOTR

other than that, i don't know

just don't think they are equal is where i'm stuck

:)

I already said assuming they are both stellar quality. Let's just assume that part is even :)

Do you play games or do you sit there and speculate what it's worth/going to be worth?

I own both games, love both games. However, if I had to make a choice. BYE ADDAMS! :) LOTR is amazing...no reason to get all "ew yuck Stern" with that game. LOTR is a proven winner - Stern made over 7000 of them, so obviously the market was there and people wanted them. They've steadily held their value for almost 10 years now...nothing to worry about there. It has proven itself as a great game...end of story...doesn't matter what factory it came out of.

Out of curiosity -which Sterns have you had trouble selling? I've never had a problem selling a Stern game....so far I've sold WOF, BDK, IM, AP, LOTR (I had a 2nd one...still kept one!). Sterns like Spidey and Family Guy keep rising in value and desirability....Simpsons Pinball Party has held its value despite being the most produced Stern (10,000 units!). The only Sterns I imagine are hard to move are some older ones like Striker Extreme, Sharkeys Shootout...and some of the recent dud-themes like 24 & NBA. Hell, people rag on CSI but those always seem to sell pretty quickly!

It's really a personal choice, what you like better and if you think you'll miss your AF.

Personally, I love LOTR (so much that I bought a NIB LE when they came out) and would chose it over AF any day of the week. It is a totally different style of game, though, and I could see that if you really liked that old Lawlor style of play such as AF or TZ, then you may regret getting rid of your AF.

But to me, my TZ left (old Lawlor style game) and my LOTR is still here, and I have no regrets!! (I did like TZ btw, but just not as much). LOTR is a standout game to me, question is will it be for you too?

Good luck!

Both are good games. Bally/Williams made a ton of Addams Family pins (over 20k) so finding a replacement down the road should not be a problem. Even if you find a project TAF game there is a ton of reproduction parts for this game (sideart, playfields, plastics, boardsets, etc).

I prefer TAF over LOTR. For me it is all about 'theme'. I do not like LOTR movies. Also TAF feels more solid (quality of construction, flipper action, etc) than a Stern LOTR.

You can't go wrong with either game. Prices of both machines have gone up over the years.

It is amazing that a game like TAF with a high production run continues to go up in price.

I think TAF keeps going up because I personally have seen sooo many just thrashed. Sure, high production numbers, but that was in a time where I bet most of them were routed, where as now there are a lot more NIB bought for the house.

So much magnet burn!

And to point out in general, I am definitely not anti-stern. I mean, I own a couple right now I like. However, like hsa said, they feel less solid in the flipper area as well as overall construction. I definitely have much more plastic breakage, if I have any, on my sterns over time.

As far as selling troubles. I listed a TOTAN, that thing was out the door soooo fast. Fishtales, instant. Both the sterns, harley and roller coaster tycoon, sat around for a while and waited to be sold. People tell me I have no patience, so perhaps I am guaging this incorrectly. I am just comparing them to my sale of williams/bally games. Even system 11's I have sold go much much faster. That could also be there is a larger market at that price point. Lots of factors here.

My point here is I am not anti-stern, but there is definitely a smaller market for those games in general, in my experience at least.

I would go with LOTR. I am a bit fan of that machine, and to be honest AF has never really wowed me.

IMO, LOTR will hold its value as time goes on, even if it is a Stern.

Condition of the Addams?
That is key here. There is a lot of nice Lords out there, as stated previously many people bought them for home use/etc.. Nice Addams familys are getting harder to find, something to think about...

I feel like a lot of people didn't read my initial post when I said equally great quality :p

So...The addams is in great quality. One small section of PF wear, other than that I would say CQ for the cabinet, PF, topper etc. The game is cherry for sure.

I have a mint LOTR, and have played TAF at the pinball hall of fame. While each game has it's draw I mildly prefer the LOTR. There are always Adams available to buy and trade, but if the quality of both are equal I would go with the LOTR. Best of luck in your decision, either way your not going to loose.

Add Pinball Life LOTR coils and the game JAMS...no flipper probs after that!

I hated the LOTR movies before I played the game...I'd only seen the first one in the theater and was bored silly. The game drew me in, though...it just looked and sounded so ...CLASSY! I got really into the game, decided I had to buy one...bought one, got even more into it - then gave the movies another shot. Now I like them. :)

There you go - those aren't desirable Stern games. Not only are collectors not interested in them the general public isn't interested in those themes. Put up a LOTR, Spider-Man, Family Guy, Simpsons, Iron Man, Pirates....they'll sell very fast. Good themes + good gameplay = fast sales.

Does Pinball Life sell a kit to make a Stern game feel more solid? Not talking about the flippers but Sterns lack that quality game feel. It's not just a Bally/Williams thing. The Capcom pins I had also had the high quality solid feel to it.

Personally I think LOTR feels a hell if a lot mIre solid adter years of play on route than the new games do fresh out of box....Tron is so light it feels like wer cardboard compared to LOTR, just bumping/nudging wise.
