Is the board toast, and should I just salvage chips? Never seen acid damage before.

Doesn't look like acid damage to me, not the stuff I've seen over the years anyhow. More like paint. You can see some drips on some of the chips in the lower right. If it's latex paint just soak it in water and hit it with a stiff bristle brush. Should come right off.

There might be some acid damage up near the battery under all that crap.

Yeah, I kinda doubt that's acid damage too. As bakerhillpins points out, acid damage would not have gotten on top of the ICs. Paint is a good guess, but looks kinda like somebody spilled a vanilla milkshake on it.

its funky whatever it is. the metal isn't corroded so you should be good hopefuly it wasn't on when that junk was dumped on it.

Looks like oil based paint.

Soak it in a bucket or pan of simple green and see if it comes up.

Looks like both paint and battery damage to me. Zoom in on the chips just below what looks like the battery. There is definite corrosion on the 8 chips below the battery and you can make out some corrosion bubbling from under the "paint". Clean the "paint" off and then you should be able to make a determination whether or not you can salvage it from the acid damage problem. I don't think the corrosion is caused by the "paint" because the i.c. @ u100 has corrosion and is not in the splatter zone. But, first, get that battery off the board asap. If your new battery damage repair, this would be a good candidate to practice. If your at the point that you're considering just salvaging chips, why not practice your corrosion clean up skills.

Shit. Brain is correct. I took a closer look. I count about 25 components that I can tell when zoomed in, have alkaline damage.

It seems to be alkaline damage, which is a base, requires a mild to strong acid to neutralize it.

Zep acidic toilet bowel cleaner does a fantastic job of this.

If you wish, I did board work on my cleopatra pinball that was bad off as well.

Gimme a sec and I will link that thread so you have an idea what you may be in for.

Which Taito game is this for?

Also, when the battery gasses out... Those gasses are at times what causes the most damage as it is far reaching, and travels up the legs, and inside the ic chips, then down the legs and uses the traces to go to other components like a virus infection.

But, if there are no custom chips, it should be repairable.

A pain in the ass, but repairable.
