Acid damage on a mpu is it worth saving

I showed him that and he wasn't interested. I got the bare PCB for $30, and the seller even burnt the proper ROMs for Stern Dracula for me, for a nominal fee.
I would do it . If he had kit for some one that wanted to do them self with all the parts . I appreciate you sending me the stuff tho

i would clean the pcb and use some vinegar to neutralize the acid and cut the battery off and then see how bad the damage is and than determine replace or repair.

Looks repairable if you have the skills, time, and patience.

Absolutely. I've fixed worse. It just takes time.

I would fix that. Anything is fixable with skill, time, patience and desire. I've found that the boards I've repaired are more reliable than some of the replacements. Here's a board I fixed about 6 months ago. Works like a champ and saved me $600 - about $20 in parts. Had to do the same thing with my Funhouse mpu. One of my most reliable games. Never had a problem and that was 3 years ago.

I have a mpu board with acid damage pretty bad. I seen a kit to replace the parts on eBay I was wondering if it worth trying

Fantastic thread. Thanks to everyone posting additional resources on this acid damage topic.

ITS. **NOT** ACID DAMAGE. It's **ALKALINE** damage from ALKALINE batteries. You wouldn't use an acid (like vinegar) to neutralize an acid, would you? (no, you wouldn't)

It's "it's" not "its". You wouldn't use the possessive form of "it" to replace a contraction for "it is" would you? (no, you would not)

Someone has not done their research, have they? Alkaline batteries release potassium hydroxide when they leak, which is a base. So, you are neutralizing it with vinegar. Calling it acid damage is a common misnomer.

Here's a new method of cleaning battery corrosion with ZEP Acidic Toilet Bowl Cleaner:

I can tell you for a fact it works! I've done several severely corroded mpu boards and not only did they come out looking nice again, but I saved considerable time in cleaning the board up. The three boards I did with this "new" method worked perfectly again.

Hey Ken. Will this stuff harm the non-socketed chips and the plastic sockets on the pcb? I have a pcb with some battery corrosion in middle areas of the pcb where those things are located. Is it necessary to remove soldered-on components like chips/sockets before using this stuff?

In my experience, no it won't harm them. Not necessary to remove other soldered on parts. I do remove socketed chips though.

Always wash and dry the board after you cleaned it with the toilet bowl cleaner.

Fair enough. Mea culpa. (I know this pretty well, btw, and just missed the apostrophe when typing in caps.)
