How does this NOT count as a finish!?!?

Farthest I have gotten in OutRun, ever. The game of my life for sure. BITD the 4th stage was the furthest I had ever gotten. Bastard!! Best part? My new all time HS of 8M+ is saved :)

Anyone regularly finish this game? What's the easiest/hardest routes?

I can finish semi-regularly. My best score is 25,640,570 (15.6 seconds left on the clock).

Easiest route is all lefts. Next easiest is all rights, although stage 4 on that one can give you fits.

Hardest route I can't recall but I think it is (at the forks) right, left, left, left.

The highest scoring route is (at the forks) right, left, right, right. This route is the shortest, leaving the most time on the clock, which at a million points bonus per second at the end gives you the highest score.

The route I learned that got me to the end the most was L R R R
I can finish any route at this point.

Hold START at the road fork to see the easter egg.

Any road fork? Sweet!

I'll try L R R R

Of course, which is "easiest" will depend on your driving style and skill. But which paths give you the most and least bonus time can be determined. Interestingly, it's different depending on the difficulty level set by the dipswitches:

http://reassembler.blogspot.com/2009/11/extend-time.html

With the "normal" setting, the greatest bonus time (after the 1st leg) is 243, which is for: LLLL, LLLR, RLRL, RLRR.
The LEAST bonus time (i.e. most difficult) paths give a total bonus time of 238: LRLL, LLRL, RRLL, LRLR, LLRR, RRLR.

With only 5 seconds difference between the extremes, I think that other factors are probably at least as important. For example I HATE the "desert" stage... can hardly see where the road is. Others have difficult turns (sharp corner just after crowning a hill), narrow stretches, or divided highways, which may prove more or less difficult to different people.

I used to go RRLR and finished in 4:51 on a near perfect run. I forgot the score but I'm almost certain its near the WR at TG since it was almost flawless.

Wow, thanks for all of that info. There is a ton to this game I never knew about, ha.

That easter egg isnt all that cool, so I wont worry about it :D

It wasn't a very well played game, ha. I only finished with 2 seconds left so there is much room for improvement. I was just stoked to finally finish. In all the quarters I put into this thing as a kid, it had never happened. VICTORY! Hahaha.

Congrtatulations! I have never made it to the finish myself, time for some new years goal setting.

Congrats! Your screenshot shows 3 secs left ;) You know that each of the 5 finishes has a different animation sequence, right?

I notice you use the original "km/h" speed display. I wonder if I'm the only one that like it in MPH...

I didn't even read how to change that with the kit. How do I do it?

Congrats, Jow! I never finished OutRun back in the day and did so for the first time only about a year ago, a few months after I bought mine. I was pretty addicted to it when I first got it and was playing an hour or two every night for a while.

The original nylon 'B' gear on mine started to give out a few months ago. Luckily I had begun tracking down replacement gears months earlier and even got a steel repro 'B' gear like this one. A mechanic buddy of mine changed out the 'B' and 'C' gears, hit it with a little lithium grease and then calibrated the steering, and it plays better than ever. He owns his own OutRun upright and has just about caught my high score, so I need to get back in the saddle. :D
