A youth center is selling off its arcade games, and four of them came to my place: VS Super Mario, DK Junior, Centipede, and a mame-ified Defender.

The Super Mario is going to become a Donkey Kong. The cabinet is in fairly good shape: a few chips around the edges, but otherwise solid. No water damage.

Interestingly, it's got this front plexi:

So I'll probably be trading/giving/selling a nice DK Junior plexi in the near future.

The DK Junior is in very nice shape. CPO, bezel, cabinet are all excellent. The T-molding isn't too great. For one thing, it's black. Plus, it's been tacked into place with brads.

It's completely missing it's side art (which is no big deal). Worst part will be removing the monitor bolts when the new artwork goes on.

The centipede is in pretty good shape. It's got a few chips around the edges, but nothing too bad. The CPO needs refreshing. The side artwork is basically perfect.

The bearings are pretty much shot (either that, or really filthy -- probably shot and filthy).

The monitor has some issues. You can see the retrace on the left 1/3 of the screen. And the width tends to shrink and expand. I'm guessing this will be fixed by new caps, and possibly some joint reflow. When it comes time for it, I'll probably be posting in the monitor forum.

Last, and most certainly least, is the poor Defender cabinet. It's had wood-grain applied to the sides, the back panel is missing (the 21" computer monitor sticks out the back), it's got a generic (and broken) "Arcade" marquee, and the control panel looks like this:

To be fair, it came with a second panel which appears to be a Defender panel with a Willis overlay and an extra button stuck on:

I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do with this one. I'll probably attempt to restore the cabinet to its former glory, but I'm not sure whether I'll put a Defender board in it, or keep it as a mame machine.

Unfortunately (for me) it's a DK Junior flipped over, not a DK. And my Junior already has a good plexi.

Damn they drilled extra holes in that cpo I have been looking for one of those!

Got the back panel off the Super Mario today. Was able to turn the entire lock cylinder with a screwdriver. I was happy to find that the monitor supports were all intact, so I shouldn't have any trouble rotating the monitor back to vertical.

Also, the original DK instruction sheet was still stapled to the door.

So I "just" need sideart, bezel, control panel, marquee, boardset....

Argh. My quest to convert the VS cabinet to a DK just hit its first snag. I didn't pay enough attention when bidding on a "Donkey Kong two boards pcb" auction, and I wound up with two boards...out of four. I've got the CLK and VIDEO boards from a 4-board set. :(

So I was looking at the serial# tag on the back of my Super Mario, and I noticed sometime interesting. They installed the VS tag over the top of the DK tag. (Maybe this was normal?)

In any case, my VS cabinet just became a Donkey Kong cabinet. Honest, that's what the serial number says.;)
