When the blacklight is off, can you see the half moon in the background, or is the mirror pretty opaque without back-lighting? I may have an opportunity to get one from the hands of an op who doesn't want it, but I want to make sure that they didn't change out the mirror with some other random one. It needs a serious cleaning, most of the bulbs are burnt out, and the contacts need to be cleaned/reset since it seems to not have a good connection somewhere. It does look to be complete, works, and the sideart is not all cracked and dried out like many that I've seen. And, no, I'm not getting it for $50 or some other lowball price.

As I remember, even with a freshly cleaned glass, it was near impossible to see the moon base unless it was black-lit with black light.

Ok. Sweet. I may end up getting this then. I'll have to go with a light just to be sure, but it sounds like everything is original then.

Mine was the same way when I picked it up a couple months ago. Cleaned off all the dust, rebuilt the power supply, and installed a new white blacklight bulb and starter, all works well now. As all have said above, cannot see the moon base when the black light is not working. Grainger does carry those white bulbs.

FYI - If the mirror has been taken out (for cleaning, working on the machine, etc)... and then gets put in facing the wrong way, you will get a messed up looking image. (I can't remember exactly what it looks like.. maybe blurry or double image.. something like that). Anyway.. my point is that the mirror must be put in the right way. If something doesn't look right when you get it all set up, try taking the mirror out (carefully!) and flip it around.

Just look in from the back. You'll be able to see through it out the front, letting you know it's original...
