A Pooyan in the rough... Finally one of my quests has ended !

I noticed a local craigslist ad for a "Commando" pictured here:

claimed in the ad, it was working 100% for 3 bills, and noticed it was posted a few days ago. My first thought was this thing is most certainly sold. But more importantly I noticed that it was inside a Stern cabinet, specifically a Bagman / Pooyan / Minefield. Those of you who don't know I have been searching for a long time for a "Pooyan", as was Killert6969 (Troy) who nabbed one from Anthony at Quarter arcade. As far as I'm concerned it's a pretty rare cabinet to find (specifically pooyan). In the few years I was looking I saw maybe 1 for sale in CA (Wrong coast, and that one supposedly had water damage) I couldn't justify shipping a game especially with water damage for an exuberant amount of money. Some one on the forum even offered me a FREE bagman "empty" cabinet in PA.. which I was seriously thinking about but had a large chunk cut out of the front and was stripped etc. Over the course of the years I've been searching for a complete cab I managed to snatch up all the necessary parts should I ever find the actual cab. Dedicated bent marquee, NOS CPO,PCB, (Brian Jones aka Prok) Side art.
I said alright I might as well call the guy to see which stern cab it was or if it's still even available... To my first surprise it was still available. I asked since in the photo it didn't show the sides at all "what color was the cabinet." the guy replied it was yellow. I said ok, it's 100% likely a Bagman, I still wanted to visually check it out. At this point I get to his house, the cabinet was complete and I said can I have a look inside the cabinet.. to my delight I saw BLUE over spray from the Stern factory! The guy said.. you know what I think I see blue behind the yellow laminate / Formica. He peeled away the yellow laminate / Formica and sure enough not only was it blue but you were able to see the out line from the original Pooyan side art, including the serial number on the side of the cab. I was incredibly stoked at this point ! I couldn't believe that I found my Pooyan after all these years merely only 10 miles from my house! Not only that, but the monitor was working with a G07 inside. The guy said to me if you want it how about 200... I said yes!
I honestly would probably of bought it even if it was a Bagman cabinet anyways, personally I don't enjoy Bagman's gameplay and would of been happy to paint it blue! According to Jon aka eXidy he said the only differences in the bagman / pooyan cabinets are a support piece of wood which I did notice on the Pooyan which was converted to the commando. Other than that if it's in a line-up you can't tell.

**Just curious if Data East / Capcom ever actually distributed the yellow laminet with the commando kits or if this was something done by the person. It looked like it was cut perfectly.

Any ways this was taken with my cell phone after peeling some of the laminet to reveal that it is infact an original blue paint *(along with the shitty adhesive i'm going to need to goof-off) from Pooyan! The other side which isn't shown had the serial as well as the pooyan sideart outline:

More pics to follow tomorrow when I have more time to work on my POOYAN Project !!

Congrats on the find. If I am in the area again I defintely want to check it out. It has been a while since I saw one of those.

Sure, once I'm done restoring it you can look at it play it... but this one is not ending up in your SUV !

would love to find one of those...congrats.

Thanks ! I can't even begin to emphasize just how difficult it was to track down.

Nice score. I love to find rare cabs like that. I hate to see them converted, but I have definitely bought converted cabs purely for the potential of the cab and not the game it was converted to.

I did not realize how rare those cabs were till I did a wearhouse raid last weekend and came up with 8 or 9 bent Stern marquees. I had never seen a bent Stern marquee, let alone the several that I nabbed. A few of them were for games I had never even heard of, so I figured the cabs must be rare. I think I have 2 or 3 Pooyan Marquees in the group, so let me know if yours is not in real nice shape and I will see if any of these are in better shape.

same cabinet as Bagman, i have one here to copy, just haven't gotten to it yet!

I know I almost bought a blank reproduction one from you... However as eXidy aka Jon can contest they are not completely identical VERY close but Pooyan has a support wooden bar connecting the two sides of the cab on top / behind the marquee area. In a line up you can't tell ; unless you stand on a barstool etc and check but that's just ludicrous.

I worked on the control panel today .... I even used the existing carriage bolts, sanded them to make em shinny. Had the correct color leaf buttons, and Wico joystick available which was nice.

Control Panel Before:

During :) :

Control Panel After:

The colors pop on the Control Panel so much that my marquee that I have looks slightly faded, I just might need to buy a NOS marquee which i know are expensive but readily available on ebay. I appreciate it Wiz.. on the marquee offer but I think If I upgrade it's gonna be NOS! That's really the last thing on my mind.. I really need to focus on the cabinet it self removing the goo, sanding, bondo, priming, painting etc.

Wow! Looks great! The color is so vivid.

I have a nos cpo that I got recently, I can't bring myself to install the new one..

There are alot of us looking for a Bagman and the others..

my Bagman does have that support piece your speaking of. It's over the game top, towards the back, and above the game top, it connects the cabinet sides together. Pretty sure they are 100% identical.

Something slightly strange that I noticed about the cabinet. So it had the typical tiny lock bar holes which I decided to fill with bondo. When I went to sand it down to smooth it out I noticed that underneath the black paint on the front of the cabinet was the same blue from the factory. I know the flyer shows the front is black, and my black looks like it was factory painted (before I started sanding it of course!). Did stern decide that the game would possibly get dirty so they decided to paint the front black ? Or did they just spray the whole thing blue, than paint the black over it which was possibly easier during production? Any other Pooyan owners can confirm ? Was this a typical method used by various other companies ?

Congrats! Love mine. Wish the wolf's head wasn't ripped a bit on the side, but I think I'll leave it original unless I find some NOS art.

Got some more done... but not finished yet... It's turning out IMO great so far.

I still need to install new T-Molding, wire up the board, maybe a new power supply, replace the tinted plexi, (possibly cap kit the G07) some cam locks relatively easy stuff... I think the hardest part left is getting it into my basement.

Wow. I know web pics hide the smaller flaws, but that looks great!!!
