Love this: While trying to sell my tempest I get this email.

I'd love to give his email address to everyone, but I suppose I would be the criminal then. Apparently the guy is from New Brunswick Canada. I wonder how many, if any, free games he has gotten from this scam? Maybe I am just too untrusting... but this one stinks.

He asked if I still had the game for sale in the previous email. I replied yes the first one here with cash gets the machine. This is his response.

Thanks for the prompt response to my mail. I will be buying from you
so please kindly withdraw the advert from C.LIST. Please be informed
that i will be paying with a certified check from my Bank it will be
delivered to you via United Parcel Service (UPS), so I'll need you to
provide me with the following information to facilitate the
mailing of the check...
Name to be on the payment...........
Home address...........
City..............
State...........
Zip Code..............
Cell phone #................
I will make arrangements for the pick up as soon as you have your
money I am completely satisfied with the advert and the payment will
be delivered within 2-3 working days.** I use a hearing impaired phone
# and will receive your calls via email ** N.B UPS does not deliver to
a P.O box addresses.Thank You.

its a scam. They'll mail you a fake check for more then the amount and ask you to wire them the difference back. You bank will then figure out its a bad check leaving you holding the bag.

In Cash, In person or no deal.

well it is a scam
but if you want to play ball with this guy
tell him you will accept his money but he cannot get the game for 30 -60 days
till it deffintly clears both banks (yours and his)
and when you get the check (it will be a fake one) make sure you talk to the bank manager about the situation, or even better talk to teh bank manager today and ask him what is the best way to get the funds the right way.

I just ignore those scams, I never reply, they just get deleted as soon as I see it. I get those ALL the time, even if I "hide" my email address on my posting. You can tell a scam is coming because the first email will have a generic message such as "hi is your item still for sale" No specifics as to what is being sold, etc...

They are flat out stupid, I posted a "wanted" ad last week for some games and I got a response asking if my item is still for sale. What's wrong with people?

Actually, nothing more than they've decided to take up a life of crime. Once you've decided to be a criminal, all of the 'inappropriate' responses are just the result of the criminal spamming out as many attempts as possible in as short a time as possible.

These aren't detailed get-to-know-you scams, these are mass-produced, the-more-I-send-the-more-suckers-I-find scams. If the scammer takes time to detail the responses properly, he's not finding the maximum number of suckers. And let's face it - if you're the type that will be taken in by a cashier's check scam, then the initial inappropriate response isn't going to trigger your non-existent BS filters.

Those scammers are number one reason I hate craigslist. I think craigslist has potential to be awesome, but when I post something, I don't want my inbox full of spam and scams. That's why I always put my cell number and say call/text me, no emails. Yet somehow, they still get my email address...

I use craigslist often for the business I'm in and selling games. I get these scams daily. I know now to just delete them and not respond. I used to get three or four checks a week. LOL

Maybe this is silly question; what can he do with my email address?

Other than send me lots of ads for viagra?

Just spam. They don't even get your direct address unless you give CL permission to do so -- they're just initially sending mail to the [email protected] (or whatever) email address and it gets forwarded through CL to the one they have for you from when you set up the ad.

When you cancel the ad, it's deactivated.

You must not advertise too much on craigslist if this is the first scam
message you have received, think there is a guy on here or over on the
RGP that has a whole bulletin board full of checks he has collected
from these people.

Why do people think it is a crime to reveal someone's email address?

Exactly... You should be revealing the address to the service provider they are using (e.g. Yahoo, Gmail, etc). They will kill the account promptly when they figure out it is being used for these scams.

Best thing to do is to ignore it. We get these TTY scams all the time, but over the phone. It sucks for the legit deaf person that really needs to use it to communicate. But scammers use them to steal instead. Sad.
