I got a used "working" WG4900 to replace the one I couldnt get going. This one was working except I believe the blackness pot was having issues. The brightness was pulsating a little and then went dark. Just barely moving the blackness pot would cause it go completely dark or completely black. Then, when I was trying to adjust it, I heard a fairly loud SNAP. I unplugged it quick, and did not see any smoke, blow caps, or smell.

I assume I need a new Blackness pot, but what else is going on?

could be your blackness pot :)
could be a bum tube.
could be lots of things.
Could be your flyback!.
I have those new in stock now ..
seriously could be your flyback and the symptom fits that as a possibility.. sorry don't have a good answer for you though hard to say for sure.

weak guns while you are trying to squeeze out brightness.
a misadjusted chassis to tube could also do it.
