A mini-garage raid - help me price this deal please

Stopped by the house of a local bar owner in town today, and he's got 2 Nintendo cabs in his garage he's interested in getting rid of.

Cab 1: Vs Hogans Alley

  • Wiring seems to be original - lots of dust on board cage, 100v outlet present in the bottom of the cab
  • DK bezel? What's the Hogan's Alley one look like?
  • gun not working
  • missing front kick plate
  • coin mechs are Asahi, but they don't match the openings in the coin door
  • Original 20EZ monitor seems to be OK (even though I could tell the flyback was turned up WAY too high) - mounted horizontally
  • Sound not working (found speaker hanging in the cab, maybe came unhooked when it fell down?)
Cab 2: Playchoice cab (I believe?)

  • definitely converted to JAMMA - Lee Trevino's Fightting Golf (puke)
  • No sign of original wiring anywhere
  • Original Sanyo monitor, mounted horizontally - looks great
  • Controls not working properly
  • Sound works fine
Son is selling these cabs for his dad, who just wants them out of the garage.

My questions are:

  1. What are/were these cabs originally? Are they worth snagging for a decent price for restoration candidates?
  2. What's a fair offer on the pair of the cabs?

The Hogans Alley was a Donkey Kong, bezel and cab give that away. I personally would not offer over $200 for them and would probably start at ~$150.

Yeah, I kind of figured that. What about the other cab?

Weird thing about the Lee Trevino Fighting Golf cab is that is has a speaker grille sandwiched between the marquee and bezel - tough to see in the pics but it's there. What cab had that?

I really was not sure on that one. Maybe someone else can chime in. Do you have a profile picture so we can see the cab shape?

A few more side profile pics of the Fighting Golf cab.

$100 ea.
Start out offering $150 total....if you walk out paying around $200 total then I would consider that fair. The parts are worth close to that.

Yeah, I'm thinking the Fighting Golf game is an older single Paychoice upright, like the one seen on the Mario Brothers (Playchoice) KLOV page:

http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8625

That's a pretty close mtach to this cab.

I was also thinking $150 for both cabs. The son dropped me a price of $200 while I was standing there, and I told him I'd think about it.

I'll see if he bites at $150.

I looked inside both of them. The Hogan's Alley cab looked like it had original wiring. Is there any way to tell whether or not the board inside is a Playchoice10 board with only 1 game populated, or was Hogans Alley available as a separate pcb too? All I could tell upon quick inspection was that pcb looked like it was original - lots of dust, no loose wires anywhere. But there was a cage over it, so it was hard to tell.

Reason I ask is because it'd be nice to snag a PC10...

Thought I had seen these before... ;)

The Hogan's Alley is a VS game. A main motherboard with Hogan's Alley ROMs and PPU installed. Similar to PC10, but better :p Was probably originally a DK.

The Fighting Golf was either a PC10 Single, or a dedicated VS Unisystem (yes they made those). Not an R-Type due to the second joystick configuration of the CP.

$100 apiece is fair, anything less is better.

Yeah, I've done edumacated myself now on Nintendo stuff.

Apparently, the VS system was a kit install that you retrofitted into a Nintendo cab back in the day. This one must have been done in a DK.

With the exception of the kick plate missing, I believe that cab is in good shape. It would be a good candidate for restoration.

I could move the VS Hogan's Alley over to the other cab, and get a decent DK resto going next winter.

Whatcha yall think?

The more I look at that black cabinet, the more it looks like a VS Unisystem cabinet. I had a dedicated Unisystem and it was an identical shape to that. Are the sides of the cabinet formica? I believe the Unisystem cabinet finish was very different from the playchoice. My Unisystem was a gray formica... if you can check what's under that black paint, it might reveal a few more clues.

Is the metal serial tag still on the back of the Hogan's Alley? That would be an easy way to tell.

I almost took a picture of it with my phone, but I couldn't get a clear enough shot with my P.O.S. Samsung Hue to see it.

Even if we KNEW it was a Unisystem, would that matter much? I've had a peek at the inside of the cab, and it's pretty much JAMMA from top to bottom inside there. Converting back back would require a substantial investment in parts.

I agree... you'd never want to convert that one back. If anything, toss a JAMMA board in there, clean it up and you have yourself a nice jamma cab.
