A Journey Into Capcom's CPS2 Silicon

So, will it be reasonably possible for someone to build an FPGA implementation of CPS2, or is it still a long ways away before it would be feasible?

On this vein - any thoughts why Capcom would have wasted so much die space on so many chips? That just seems so stupidly costly.

Probably for asset protection purposes, in CPS2 besides pushing the previous CPS1 hardware for better graphics (ram, rom, sprites, palette), the emphasis was to stop bootlegs and operator driven conversions.

Excellent breakdown. Would be interesting to see someone push the hardware beyond the "limits" like we see in the homebrew console scene for the CPS2.

That's a great point, I would love to see someone produce an SDK for CPS1 or 2 so new games could be produced.
