so my friend who runs a wood shop was tired of looking at some of my broken down "busted ass" arcade cabinets. He told me he would love to build me one and help me work on it as I am unable with my hand being f-ed up. So heres the deal, its going to be a brand new cocktail multi game. But first I want your thoughts as to materials and colors. I want something out of the normal so I was thinkin instead of 3/4 ply maybe some melame?? So if I go that route what color of t-molding and what color of meleme? Or should I just use plywood and paint it? Any input? Its going to be a 60-1 because I love being able to play pooyan and dk3 on the same machine lol!

I am not a woodworker by trade, so I probably have NO idea what I'm talking about, but I'd stay away from plywood....at least, on the outside. If you don't cover it with something (laminate, vinyl, etc) it looks like painted plywood, and I'd hate to see you go to all the trouble to build a new machine and have it look like that. As far as color choices go, it's your machine. Go as wild and crazy (or not) as you want to.

You can get finish grade ply to use. Most mamers use MDF, but that stuff is dusty when you cut it and weighs a ton.

You can actually purchase 'paint grade poplar' plywood, which I think would be ideal for your DIY cabinet. It's not that expensive, and finishes well. You don't get the 'painted wood' look

3/4" cabinet grade ply is the way to go for sure. it is strong and will stain nicely and no it will not look cheap or painted.

Absolutely. I have a couple of cabinets made with it and they look beautiful.
