I recently acquired an Out Run, and I've been saving up my questions...

1) When you insert a quarter, and the "radio selection" screen appears; is there music playing (the selected station), or just ocean waves?? I thought I remembered music during this selection, but my memory from the mid-80s is sometimes faulty... On my PCB, all I hear are ocean waves until after pressing start (then the music kicks in).

2) This one's just for the upright owners: What's supposed to be over the monitor face? The manual diagram lists both plexi and glass (and I've seem both for sale on ebay). Mine only has a sheet of smoked plexi, no glass. Do you have smoked plexi? Glass? Both? (Neither? Other?)

3) (also upright related): The "red stripe" on the front of the cabinet. Anyone aware of repros of NOS available? If not, ever seen good a quality artwork file? Mine was removed or painted over...

Thanks!

1. just waves. music starts after you press START or select screen times out.

2. mine is clear glass. i believe this to be standard.

3. not sure about repro, but i've had a lot of success using large amusement distributors and their extensive stock to get sega parts, even on 25yo games. also try calling sega service at 847-364-9787. they're cool and if they don't have it in stock, they can often point you in the right direction. a racing stripe you could go without. i bet your friends won't even notice.

Thanks guys.

I'm relieved that the waves playing (with no music) is normal. No real surprise that it was my brain that is faulty, not the PCB.

Interesting to see the 50/50 split between plexi and glass. I tried it with my (gray smoked) plexi off: It sure was brighter, but the burn-in on the CRT was more noticable too... so I put it back on.

3. I have a repro that I made :D

Could you share a little about how you did it and how it turned out? (and if you made any extras...)

I'm going to try stripping some paint off the front of mine to see if it's under there. If not (or unsucessful), I'll be trying to whip something up too.
