I think general discussion is appropriate for this. If it belongs in the help section I apologize.

just curious if this is normal. I am noticing some sounds cut out when passing other bikes on the road. I am thinking this is normal or could be simply because I have the music shut off. Anyone know if this is normal? If not, what could be the cause?

I am also curious if the game is supposed to save high scores. Mine doesnt but I am thinking this is also normal. I don't see a battery anywhere in the boardset.

Thanks in advance.

I know mine didn't save high scores when it was powered off. I just listened to your video, all sounds were normal during the portion I watched through the first level

This video isnt the best example. But if you skip ahead to about 3:25 youll hear it cut out twice. It especially happens when passing multiple bikes. I know the "beep" is normal, but I'm referring to the sound cutting out alltogether. All sounds are working in test mode.

Another thing I notice on rare occasions is the game boots to garbage. Turning it off and back on corrects this. It's only done this twice since I've had it. My Sega Turbo did something similar when I owned it, must be a Sega thing?

I see what you mean now, I should have watched longer. I don't know that I would have specifically noticed what you were talking about had you not pointed it out to me. It seemed like typical variations during normal game play, but I could be wrong. My buddy bought my game from me, lives about six blocks away. I can run over and play it tomorrow if nobody else gives you a definite answer tonight.

You definitely have audio issues, possibly the
crumby little 8watt amp board. Recap it?
Cleaning up your connectors is never a bad
idea either.

Also, Switch #6 on Dip Bank B controls
the game music.

Off = background music during game
On = no music (yours is set to this)

All connections have been cleaned, all chips reseated. I know about the BGM, I have it off, just my preference. I assume your referring to the small amp at the power supply? Not a big deal but Ill try capping it eventualy. Thanks.

Maybe I just can't hear them in the video, but it sounds like the drum samples in the attract mode music aren't playing, while the synthesizer tones are. This may be related. Weird.

It is a Sega thing! I told you man, they're glitchy.

The thing is though, Sega makes FUN games. So they're really cool games, it's just so frustrating when they either have catastrophic issues or minor little things that bug the hell out of you. I definately think I see it more in Sega games than most other manufacturers. The newer Sega stuff has a reputation for being really expensive to repair as well (400 bucks for an optic board? whut? )

Be thankful yours boots, if it ever develops other issues it'll probably be easier to figure out the problem, since you know it was working fine before. When you get one that's been setting and the board doesn't work, it's almost impossible for me to fix (with my limited skill set!) and nobody works on the boards.

I think that the issue is that there are 2 bikes in those situations where the sound cuts out. It might be that all the sound channels are being used and a sound gets left out. I think it wouldn't be as noticeable if you had the music on. Besides the music is awesome.

Nothing against the BGM, its alright, but it does get repetitive. Alli and I tried it both ways and we both prefer the music off. She says its less distracting (especially when we have Dee Snider on), as for me, it kind of reminds me a little of Pole Position with the music off.

I don't think its a board issue. the ROM/RAM test checks out fine every time, and no missing sounds in the sound test. I think Yaggy might be on to something with that amp. Ill cap it eventually. Its really not a big deal.

Just an update, it was a board issue after all. I started getting more sounds out of the blue, but the sound also started getting really scratchy. After reseating every chip on the sound CPU's another time, I started getting garbage, just great. Luckily I was able to go into a messed up looking test menu and did another RAM/ROM check. IC20 read bad, so I cleaned and reseated chips on 2 boards where IC20 was marked. Now the game is working perfect again, nothing cutting out, and the missing drum and passing bike sounds are back.

Just thought I'd update just in case anyone has a similar problem later on.
