I was just trying to post an item for sale on eBay
and I get this big flashing banner that shouts "NO INSERTION FEES ! ",
but then when I read the fine print, I see that the seller fee is 9% !!!!

9% ???? WTF ?!?!?

Anyone else get this, or is just me ?

What a crock !

I wasn't big on eBay before, but I'm just going to give it up for good now...

Scammers....

Notice it said "insertion fee". 9% is the "final value fee". They frequently run that gimmick.

Yah, I get that...

But I don't recall it even being 9% for FVF.

The promo said "as of Sept 28th" .

I did a bit of Googling and it looks like this has been in place since March 2010 in the US,
but it looks like it's just now hitting Canadian customers ...

Now I get the "GreedBay" comments alot more...

Sheesh....

Steph

It's been 8.75% for awhile now, must have recently increased it. I dont sell much on eBay these days, the fees are just ridiculous. eBay store sellers get the real perks as they usually just pay a monthly fee for the service, but us joe schmo sellers just get the occasional "free insertion" deals, YIPPIE :D

In the US, at least, they seem to be running free insertion until January sometime, so there's at least that. My suspicion is that they'll keep making up new sales to do the free insertion thing, because otherwise who the hell is going to list with them?

Sadly, EBay and Half.com both have gone the same way - paid too much attention to the volume sellers, at the expense of the small sellers, making it a worse place to buy, unless you just need cheap commodity junk.

Ahh well.

I look at it as the cost of advertising your item to a nearly infinite amount of people (or to the amount of people looking for a particular item). You can't get that level of exposure on here or in a Craigslist ad in most areas. It makes sense for some items, sometimes it makes more sense to put something on CL.

I got lucky and a bid war broke out on a transformer toy auction of mine a few months ago, and at least doubled what I would have made anywhere else. I wanted them gone, I didn't want to troll around a forum like this for something I had no interest in. Made sense to me. Not to mention G1 Transformers are a hell of a lot more sought after than PCB's and marquees right now. LOL

Being the cheap bastard that I am,
I figure the way around this would be to list a cheap item with the key words I want
(...so that people find it ) and then include info in the description
for the pricier stuff I actually want to sell.

Something like :
----
Title : PacMan PCB
Price : $2

Description : This auction is for a PacMan PCB EPROM only ($2).
If you want to buy the actual PCB, contact me.
----

I wonder how long it would take for them to catch on....

Really I got a box of junkers I need to get rid of. I thought the TF market dropped off.

Do you list on gamegavel.com? Not sure how good the visibility is on there these days, but it is certainly the right type of auction site for someone with your product.

store

stores dont pay fv commision?
is that tru?

i had a Q*BERT i was trying to sell here first, then CL then ebay. it sold to a guy in colorado who sent a shipping company to pick it up, everything went flawless. he paid $550.00 paypal after ebay invoice, paypal fee's i eneded up with $484.45= $65.00 in fee's BUT i think $484.45 was fair for the game. im NOT promoting ebay but sometimes it's the best way to sell your stuff.

Here's an eye-opener for you guys...print this out and read it before you think of listing on ebay any time soon.

I've given up on gamegavel. After selling one MC board there I got excited and subsequently listed several others that just sat and didn't sell. It's great for the console market but not so much for arcades, unfortunately. I wish GG had the exposure that eBay does, but it just can't compete. :(

They've got top level sections for every major (and a number of minor) consoles, and then they have 'Arcade', 'Pinball' and 'Jukebox'. Their focus at every level is clearly on the consoles, so it's no surprise that the arcade stuff languishes.

The ebay fees have been killer for quite a while....also factor in the 3%ish from Paypal and it really makes alot of things just not worth listing.

Plus you pay paypal fees on the total amount which includes shipping.

I sold some car parts on there last month. Have not used ebay as a seller for a long time. The parts sold for 225.00 and I was hit with a 20.53 FVF - and thought WTF.

Lets see, with the 20.00 fee, paypal fees because the buyer paid with a credit card, and shipping that I under estimated, I think I ended up making about 160.00 off of my parts on a 225.00 deal.

I won't be using ebay to sell any more. I do however buy on there quite frequently.

I may try my next game on gamegavel. My most recent auction on ebay had a few watchers and some bids.I tossed the link on craigslist and the page views started climbing, the watchers tripled and i got a few more bids.i figured as soon as i posted the link every klover within 200 miles of me got a notice that there was a pin on craigslist.Benefits,I don't have to deal with crackheads emails and phone calls, just delete them,if they want to contact me they can do it through ebay.Craigslist has alot of exposure and may be just the thing to combine with gamegavel. This is my first time tossing a link on craigslist and i like the result. Now if it works as well with gamegavel as it did with ebay, well i wont know until i try.
