80's news story about "Pacmania"

LOL! Takes about 40 mins to put together a machine, and it took weeks to restore mine. They also make it look so easy, and I would love to be the guy who gets paid to play.
I love vintage videos like these.

BTW the tricks that they had shown, do they still work?

I ran into this newsclip from the 80's about "Pacmania". I thought it was worth sharing. Somebody bring back the "shag" haircut...:D

It also has some great video of Midway's Pac Man manufacturing line.

Thanks for sharing!!! My brother and I recorded this back in the day. I was one of many videos i've been meaning to track down. The version you linked looks way better then the one we recorded on our crappy VCR. I rmemeber the inro about the pac-man story was different from the one you linked. Thanks again!!

Thanks Shertz, for the link. I'm trying to amass these types of videos and Starcade, etc locally - this is a great help. I was digging around for a FLV saver when I saw your link.

Firefox + DownloadHelper extension works great for this.

Can anyone detail exactly how to reproduce the bug shown at 5:28-5:42 in that video? I'd always heard about that, but was never able to do it. Does it only happen on one particular screen? Details, details, I want details!

It's commonly referred to by Pac players as a "booey." No, it has nothing to do with what screen you're on. It has everything to do with perfect timing on the collision detection.

Explanation: http://home.comcast.net/~jpittman2/pacman/pacmandossier.html#Chapter_3

Don Hodges, who made a name for himself in this hobby by disassembling the code of several of these old games to explain and fix bugs, is the master of setting up booeys. Watch this and prepare to shit yourself (and no, he's not using an invincibility cheat):

Don's discovery of two separate booeys in the tunnel:

The pattern works! When I originally saw this show back in the day, I developed a pattern for based on this. It only works on the Cherry level. Just follow the pattern shown in the video (even if its not sped up) just standard speed.

A Pac-Man board is a "mass of integrated circuits, transistors, resistors, tangelents, capacitors and diodes."

Well, now we know what makes a Pac-Man board work.

Cool! So glad I got my Ms Pac machine!

Pac will never die, it's still popular today.

I can do it from time to time by moving the joystick back and then forward a split second prior to hitting the ghost. In the video they didnt appear to do what I described. It looked like they just went straight through it. Dunno, I never had the attention span to learn patterns and such.

80s FLASHBACK!! Only twenty minutes to build a pac, takes a lot longer when it is spread across my garage floor. When people first find out you collect video games, how often do you here "do you have a pacman?".
