How do they work?

Hi folks, just wondering how a 80s cab would operate in terms of wiring and hardware.

For example I got outrun pcb which I know isn't jamma

How do the steering wheel and gas work, are they on microswitchs like normal push buttons.

Would be very interesting to know.

Most of them have the steering wheel and gas pedals arttached to potentiometers, variable resistors. Like a volume control. The connections from that go to an analog-digital converter on the game board which translates the position into a number the game needs to know what you're telling it to do.

I believe most of the steering wheels used optical encoders. That way you could spin the wheel continuously without damaging anything.

Optical encoders seemed to be the standard in the early days, but everything seemed to switch to potentiometers around the time of Out Run.
