Time for another giant Mouser order and in the process I thought I'd fix all of my Atari power cords that have the ground lug broken off. Which is like all of them. That's currently 7 cords. In the process I thought I'd look up how much it costs to build my own and upgrade to 10' cords from the standard Atari 8' cords. Since my "gameroom" is more like a operator warehouse than actual livable space it's hard to know for sure if paying up for longer cords is worth the cost (which isn't much). I know that in my current configuration the longer cords would be really nice to have but long term if I ever get my basement fixed up I wonder if it's nice to have or not?

Looking through mouser I've found that the following Kobiconn cords to be a suitable replacement. The important dimension was the cable thickness which appears to be 0.3125" (5/16") for Atari games. The Kobiconn cords were the only pigtail cords on Mouser I could find with jacket diameter specs, none of the other 18/3 mfgs had that listed.
Kobiconn 173-73103-E 18/3 10' - $9.54 vs
Kobiconn 173-73102-E 18/3 8' - $6.83

The 03-09-1032 molex part was only 0.29 each (unless you reuse the old) and then you have the 0.093 pins.

The cost of the 8' isn't much of a savings on the $8 part from say arcadeshop.com. So it's only really a question of is the extra power cord length worth it. So, what's the consensus from everyone, upgrade to 10' power cords from 8' or not?

2 feet more means more utility / flexibility. I'd look somewhere else for cords.

I cheat and just butt splice the new cord onto the existing wires at the power brick. I use Amp connectors - they are excellent.

Ace Hardware had longer black cords of the right wire gauge. So did a lot of the big box stores.

Look around - you might be surprised.

For example, on my Super Score where I was adding an outlet to connect the power to the head lamps, I was at Stock and Field (a store formerly known as Big R) and found a 12' 2 conductor extension cord for $3.29

The 8' same wire gauge and version? $6.95

The 10' same wire gauge and version? $8.95

I took the 12' and had them check the price. It was $3.29. After the sale, I told them I would check the prices - the 12' doesn't seem to be priced right as it's cheaper than the other 2.

I've checked quite a few places and found them all relatively the same $ in 18/3 with pigtail, and that's ignoring the jacket diameter which I'm suspecting the locking grommet is setup to use. I will not but splice to the power brick period.

As far as box stores, looked there too and didn't find anything that made me want to strip/pigtail for the savings. (I actually didn't find anything period that wasn't more expensive).

found a 12' 2 conductor extension cord

I don't want "2 conductor"... Consumer would have 3 "conductor"? Cuz I'm looking for w/GND to fix the clipped gnd lug problem. I wish this was standardized but it's not... Romex is always with GND so I'm always at 18/2 meaning w/Gnd but consumer stuff is not because you can get ungrounded stuff.

Don't like monoprice? Pretty cheap. $3/10ft

Example: (cut off the female end) ... comes in black, blue, green or red too ... LOL

Search the site for other gauge 3-conductor AC cords.

Never shopped there (never got a hit there?)... That's cheap and maybe worth the stripping effort. Wish I knew the jacket diameter. Looks to be 1/4" though which probably doesn't matter that much.

Yea, nothing with pigtails though... but certainly cheap. (is that good?

Excellent. Down to $1.66 each today. Find anything else at the site you want with free shipping and you're golden.

Monoprice is great, been using them for ages now.

May have been 10yrs ago, but Monoprice had a GREAT rep for a place to buy audio/video cables, etc, good stuff and not overpay. I'm going to bookmark this.

Also, were arcade or pinball related power cords EVER 16 gauge, or always 18 gauge?

I've never known a game to use more than 18 awg. That being said I don't typically go and inspect every game I have but I've never bought anything above 18 when I got a replacement either. A "standard" pinball machine or video game draws in the neighborhood of 2-3 amps and 18 awg power cords can handle up to 10 amps. So there really isn't any need/reason to up the size.

I guess I made my point badly.

I was trying to note you should shop around, since I found a longer cord for less than the shortest cord available from that store.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for clarifying

@VectorCollector followed up with the same... beyond my concerns regarding the jacket thickness is what it's made of. I've tried to avoid cheap plastic sheathing on power cords because they just suck. It's a holdover from my power tools I guess. Plastic cords on power tools are a nightmare.

I agree with your concern on plastic cords. Arcade games are a little simpler. We don't use polar solvents around them, and don't move them in sub-zero temperatures, so plastic is a little less of a problem.

Still, you should find a cord you like. I've been picking up some from Ace Hardware and Marco Speciality Products (as long as I had a big order going in, I just added a few to help improve the shipping charges).

I'm finding I have to be tactical and strategic when it comes to buying. Buy stuff in advance, and then when I need it - I don't have the right widget and have to order anyway.

Hey, wait a minute.....

Don't cut yourself short. Sometimes 8 feet is not quite enough. 10 feet for the win!!! 👊

Who even needs 8 feet? I always have too much cord.

Just get a bunch of new heads if you want to fix the ground pin (which isn't even really necessary). Keep the original cords.

You thinking too much about this.

Probably, but engineering is, unfortunately or not, always playing a role in my life.

Always short here but again, it's because it's unfinished space/storage right now and that's why I'm asking.

Many of the cords also have jacket damage. I hate the replacement cord ends anyway. YMMV Besides, depending upon where you get the cord the replacement plug is roughly the same cost and effort in the end.

most people buy the 12' cords which i would have guessed the 8' but if you think about it you lose on a lot of games about 18-24inches depending on the game so 8' doesn't give you much outside the game. ours are all top quality and 18awg with great reinforced plugs so you can pull them out of the socket all day by just the cord without issue (not that i would ever recommend doing it).
