Hello all,
Finishing up a restoration on a 720 and I wanted to clean and lube the joystick and as I about to loosen the 2 allen screws to get the discs off I realized that one screw was broken and all that remains is a small piece of it locked tight against the shaft. NOT good! Never used one of those screw/bolt extractors, anyone have a guess if it would work or not? Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help.

could you post a picture of this?

thanks,

I tried to get a decent pix of the problem but couldn't. Below are two pix from Jeff Civitate's 720 Zone site.

Here you see the 1 of the 2 locking screws in between the encoder discs

From the bottom a better shot of the 2 screws, on mine one of the screws was broken off almost flush with the housing. I did buy a screw remover but I got nowhere trying to drill the pilot hole in the broken screw. I'll pick up a HSS bit on Monday and give it another go. Another thought I had was to remove the bottom disc and then use my Dremmel to try and cut a slot into the broken screw and see if I can back it out with a flat blade screw driver. I'll need to cut into the housing as well but that shouldn't be a problem.

wow,

that seems like a real problem. i was gonna suggest to try and drill it out but it sounds like you have already tried that route. i would try and start with a really small bit to get the pilot hole and then increase in bit size.

good luck and keep us posted.

I have all these parts NOS but the hub you need is not listed on the site since I only have a couple. PM me and we'll figure something out

I say remove the discs, and the one screw you can remove, grab a tool and yank that encoder disc mounting plate off. Maybe squirt some lube oil down in the shaft to help the screw slide along the pivot arm.

That's not ideal, but it might work.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'm going to take off the bottom disc and try cutting a slot for a flat blade screw driver with the Dremel first, if that fails I'll put some oil on the shaft then use channel locks on the hub and see if I can wiggle it off (fingers crossed).
Thanks again,
Rich

Any luck with that?

No Luck, made the cut and put some penetrating oil in and let it sit for a day, it was not going to come out. I finally took it to a local machine shop and had them drill out the set screw, even after that they still had a bit of a time getting the pivot arm shaft out of the bearing. They had to use a tiny gear puller. Got a bunch of new and repro parts from Mylstar, joystick works silky smooth now.
