720 comes home

Jeff, jow, or 2600, you still out there? Do yours have tinted or clear glass?

If mine is tinted, its just slightly. Its tough to tell without taking it apart. I would go as far as saying its clear.

You mean the U-shaped piece for the base isn't the right size? I haven't applied that piece yet so I haven't encountered that. All the other pieces were a little big so there was some slop room, I figured that one would be too. I might be trying to do that piece in the next few days.

I'm not sure about the tint. Like I said I've only seen a few with tint, far more without. Would probably be best to go by the manual and/or flyer (though often the flyer is different than product, as is the case with 720 molding in the flyer).

Hm. Maybe I'll just get clear glass, it would surely be cheaper.

And yeah be really careful installing the u-shaped piece. There isn't really any room for error on that one at all, no excess on the sides whatsoever. Not sure why they did it that way. Personally I don't think I can install the piece without some excess so I'm opting to see if Rich can hook it up with a bottom side piece instead and I'll just trim the hell out of it while I install it.

Hmm I know someone had posted a reply indicating it was tinted, but I can't seem to find it so I guess it was not in my thread.

Mine had an extremely scratched and chipped piece of plexiglass over the front when I got it. I had a new one cut by a local plastics company, but both the new and old one were perfectly clear, no tint.

I believe the original had no tint as well, but I'm not 100%

Hmm... you know that is always another option, to get a plexi monitor cover. I much prefer tempered glass though as it doesn't get scratched as easy.

Wade, where was it you are going to order your tempered glass from? I might want to shoot them an email and get a quote. Also anybody else have a good place to order tempered glass from? All the local places are super expensive.

Try onedayglass.com

I've read one or two good reviews. I haven't ordered from them yet, but the online quotes are much cheaper then what I can get locally.

WOW. That is cheap. Only about $27 on their site. Shipping will likely be expensive, but still way cheaper than any of the glass places around here. Good enough for me.

Kspiff, like I said, my nearest glass shop only charges about $40 for a tempered pinball glass. Most shops don't temper but they outsource it to a shop that does, and don't charge shipping or anything extra. I've had other pieces custom cut/tempered before and they've typically been around $30 (T&F cocktail top, which is larger than a 720 glass).

I have never used onedayglass before but they might be fine. I'd just prefer to deal locally when there's really no benefit to using the internet, plus it rules out the possiblity of shipping damage. You should probably call you local glass shops, just pull out the phone book or yellowbook.com and search for "glass". Not to mention there could be a big price difference if shipping a piece of glass... their shipping might be $20-30 which would make them more expensive than your local shop, most likely.

I think I recall someone saying shipping was about $30, but I don't recall the size of the glass.

I will say this glass prices very greatly from one locale to another. I know around here I can not get a piece of glass for cheaper then one day glass and I have called a lot of places. Maybe if I want to drive an hour without traffic I could find a place, but at that point I'd rather just order it online.

That's unfortunate and surprising. I live in city of 200,000 and there are plenty of reasonably priced glass companies and I've used them several times. Maybe the glass is actually produced/tempered nearby here or something.

Shipping was $31 for the glass I specced out. Not horrible, and I'm assuming it is insured against damage at that price.

I will probably make a few calls and see if I can get anything slightly better, but it doesn't seem very likely. There aren't too many glass cutters within 10-20 miles and most of them are pricey independent places. The only one I'm familiar with would probably charge $100+ for something this size without tempering.

Hey, look, it's a MySpace-esque angle shot of my 720 which makes it look semi-attractive :D:

I'm pretty much stuck here until I get those gray and black vinyl pieces I need so it may be a while now until I can make more progress. :( I did however do half of the homemade bezel and might get a bezel glass early next week.

Looks good. Try not to let yours stall for 3 years like mine did. :) I've decided to live with the flaws in my vinyl in the interest of finishing the game some time this year. When I looked it mine last, the tiny bubbles seemed to be going away. The worst piece is one of the boombox sides which has some bumps in the original surface, but I guess I could pull it off and redo it later. I'm probably not going to be able to touch mine for several days either, I really need to test a monitor for Shardian soon and try to get some working PCB's. This weekend I have a lot of other non-game things that will probably take priority, but I might be able to work on it some next week.

I like that idea: Just live with the tiny flaws and get these 720's back into working circulation!

Mine has so many flaws, its actually my worst restored game. I did it first before I had any experience or knew about any resources like KLOV. I've also moved it a bunch of times and dinged it up. I'd thought about re-restoring it, but now think I'd like to restore another one. So WTB 720!

Anyway, hope you get your vinyl soon Spiff. I really can't wait to see these two in full working order. Keep us posted.

Nah I'm not going to stall out. I will probably finish the homemade bezel tomorrow and try to get things rewired, will probably be picking up the front glass next week (R3LL1K knows a local guy who will do a tempered piece for something like $22), and just got my payment in to Rich for the vinyl pieces I lack (understandably he was backed up from the holiday weekend). Thought I'd be further along with things by now, but this is still going pretty fast considering the amount of work that was required.

Got a good amount done this weekend after the vinyl from Rich got here:

Excuse the wires hanging from the light/speakers. I need to route those when I get back to work. Note that I even restored the somewhat useless front carriage bolt. Restos is serious business. :D

All that is left to do now is the base vinyl, base molding, rear molding, some light rewiring, and to make a new bezel. The new front glass is en route. I do still need to order 3x 7/8" cam locks from TRBR though. EDIT: Oh and some leaf switches and switch holders, I 'borrowed' some from my Peter Pack Rat CP to put on this game. :p

Getting more psyched. :D

PS the best thing about my new job is as much free 16-gauge wire (in several colors), wire ties, tie bases, heat shrink tubing, butt/spade/QD connectors as I need and access to a heat shrink label printer. :D

Nice! Looking great man. We're very close to having a brand new 720 in the world.

...and yes, I believe those wires don't go there.
