Has anybody ever played with the 7" LCD monitors? These are the kind that you find in the backs of headrests in SUVs and mini-vans.

I got lucky and scored some from a local vender off the bay and I was wondering if anybody knew anything about them. It looks like they have a power plug on on side and video on the other (see pic of the back):

Thanks for any help,

ken

I picked a couple 5" LCDs up on the cheap... they were composite in, and you'll probably need to do what i did -- take that apart and start looking for datasheets for the chips inside, and figure out what signal the device is expecting, and look for a place to inject RGB/Sync into the existing board, if it can't take it at the input...

These are supposed to be VGA. They were pulls from pachinko machines and pachislots. I've got a few of them (20+) so I guess I can experiment a little.

If anybody wants one to play with, they are $20 + shipping. PM me if you are interested.

pm sent! I'd definitely like one

One of the gurus on the Pachitalk forum had some Panasonic datasheets and thinks this one matches up the best. I have to take his word for it, they are all in Japanese. According to DaveRob (the Ken L. of pachis):

Panasonic datasheets are really tough to find as they are usually only available in Japanese, however I have a a paper copy of an old Japanese databook for some Panasonic LCD panels (but it doesn't list this particular model).

Most of these displays share a common pinout, going from the other displays the most common configuration for connectors with the same number of pins is this...

5 pin power connector.

1 - Vi (12v) Display Power
2 - GND (Vi)
3 - GND (Vbl)
4 - GND (Vbl)
5 - Vbl (12v) Backlight Power

You need to link the ground pins yourself as there is no internal connection between the ground pins for Vi and Vbl. The datasheet also recommends fitting a pair of 100uF capacitors as near as possible to the power connector (one between Vi and it's GND pin and one for Vbl).

9 Pin signal connector.

1 - GND
2 - GND
3 - Red
4 - Green
5 - Blue
6 - Sync
7 - Sync GND
8 - GND / display switching (depending on model)
9 - GND

Signal timing depends on the display model. Most smaller resolution displays need NTSC video timing, larger ones are VGA/SVGA.

I can't be certain if these pinouts are the right ones for your display. I'd suggest that you use a multimeter to check the resistance of the connections before powering up the display. The ground pins on the signal connector should be connected together in the display and the R,G,B connections should measure around 75 ohms to one of the ground pins. Then apply power to the Vbl pins to see if the backlight comes on, and finally power up the whole display if everything else checks out.

If someone can find a pachislo machine that uses this model display, then a quick check of the voltage going to the display power connector would be a great help in checking if this information is accurate.

Dave, you rock. I will post the results of the experiments once I get home and can try playing with one.

The pics are in the first message. If they are not showing, try going to my photo album. They should be in my photo album labelled parts.

I found my camera so I hope to get more pics tonight or tomorrow.

I was able to see them in the photo album, but my browser gets back a 1x1 pixel image in the thread. I can see the ones I attached, but still cannot see yours. Not sure what the deal is.

Anyway, what is the price for one shipped to 75025? :)

That is weird about the pictures. I can see them fine in three different browsers (all various versions of IE) and a Palm brower on my phone.

I have been selling them for $20 + $5 Priority mail shipping to the lower 48. Or two for $40 + $5 shipping. PM me for paypal or mailing addresses for checks/money orders.

I figured out the problem with the pictures. You use forums.arcade-museum.com or at least used that URL link to the pictures. Since the pictures are in your album, it requires the viewer to be logged in. I was not logged in on that site as I use forums.klov.com to access the message boards. Once I went and logged in to forums.arcade-museum.com they showed up when I refreshed the thread.

Also, I will send you a PM for paypal address.
