60-in-1 Phoenix High Score Save - Not All Multis Equal?

So, I just ordered a new 60-in-1 for a multi project I've been working on. I have another cabinet at home, which is for my own personal use that also has a 60-in-1. Both boards were of the "B" quality, and look close to the same. A few months ago I noticed that Phoenix on the 60-in-1 had a series of "?????????" where the HS is supposed to be. I had played it many times and never was able to replace the question marks with high scores.

So today when I got my new 60-in-1 installed, I decided to give Phoenix a go. I noticed upon hitting the P1 button, that there were no question marks in the High Score area, it was just a series of 00000s. So I put up a measly high score, and the game exited like usual and I then played it again to see my High Score saved. I cut off the power and rebooted the game, and there was my high score saved.

Concerning my original board, I have the High Score saved dip switch "3" on, and every other game saves my high score but Phoenix. These boards were purchased only several months apart. I know that the PCB's are made by several different companies too. So anybody else notice this? Is there something I'm doing wrong? I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but it sort of irritates me. I know I could just switch out the boards, and keep the one that saves the scores, but I have a lot of scores on all the other games that I want to keep.

I figured I'd just give a heads up to others, or see if anyone else has the same problem. I've not seen this really discussed before, and thought I'd start a thread about it.

I bought a couple of 48n1's from a klover and I know one of them loses high score after power down but keeps high score as long as you keep power on. they were the happy hour style ones with the gay music for intro. Ill have to tinker with my other one and see if its having issues as well but they were or appeared to be new in package when I got em.

Hmmm... Maybe you guys haven't heard about them? It's a small circuit board that has classic 60 games on it. They're referred to as multis? Seriously though, I know a lot of people around here have put together these. Anyone else ever notice this? Do you guys hate Phoenix?

I've never used a 48-in-1. Do they have DIPs you have to move to save scores too?

Yeah, has a 4 dip switch board, 1 for screen flip, 1 for score save, cant remember what the other 2 are for. I havent got my multi done yet so I cant test the high score function just yet, but the one I got at home doesnt save score after a hard power down even with the switch selected on the dip switch board.

One is to put it into service mode so you can set the game options. I think the 4th is CGA/VGA (regular computer monitor). I have the 48-in-1 (which has the 4-pin dipswitch too), but don't know if I've ever even played Phoenix on it. I'd check it, but the G07 monitor in it died and I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. BTW: You can turn off that "gay" Happy Hours music. I don't have it playing on mine.

Hmmm, if I can kill the demo music and get it to actually store high scores after power down I would actually like it though MAME does a better job emulating some games than this board does to be honest. Ill probably hunt for a better option especially if I put as much effort as I plan on redoing this multi cab from scratch and making it look all nice.

The 60 in 1 I have running right now is set up the same way on Phoenix. Anytime I start that game the high score is just ?????. Every other game seems to store the high scores though. Not sure though if mine is an A or B quality board as I bought it over a year ago, but if I had to guess I would say B quality.

It's a bummer though as I love Phoenix, and don't have a clue what my highest score is.

Well I'm seriously considering swapping the newer board with my original, just for that alone. Everything else appears normal. I plan on taking pictures of both of the boards, just for the hell of it and posting them here. My camera battery is dead right now though.

I would assume B quality board on these 48n1's as well, Once I get this cab functional Ill do some testing with both boards and compare notes here as well.

I seem to remember Phoenix acting weird in MAME as far as the high score goes (when you get it, it doesn't seem to update it). Maybe that's part of the problem (supposedly those boards are based on MAME) I don't remember how to shut off the music on the 48-in-1, but it's in the setup (I can grab my manual and post if anyone is interested). I also have mine set up for freeplay. It cycles thru the games in attract mode until you hit the player start key, then it lets you select the games like when you put a credit in when it's not on freeplay.

So here are the 2 boards side by side. The one on the right is the newer one that allows you to save a score in Phoenix. The one on the left has "??????" where the high score is supposed to be saved in Phoenix. I haven't played the newer PCB a whole lot yet, but this is the only difference I've noticed so far- gameplay wise.

Here's the rear of both boards, not that it matters much. But I took the picture so I thought I'd post it too.

I think you're right. It doesn't actually show the high score immediately after the game. I think it only gets displayed once the next game starts or something like that. Kinda sad that I can't even say that definitively even though I own a Phoenix and love the game.
