im converting a poker game in to a 60 in 1 and was wondering how many buttons are going to be needed for it (not counting one and two player) ive seen some that have 2 and some that have 3, so what is the minimum number of buttons needed?

I've only seen two in the wild but they both had 3 player buttons (non-start/select buttons) and one stick and one trackball.

Technically you only need two, but optimally you'd use three. Double that if you put buttons on both sides of the joystick.

Only two games on the 60-in-1 use three buttons - Breakout and Gunsmoke. Breakout only uses them to decided the block pattern at the beginning of the game and most people doin't even know that exists so will never miss the 3rd button. Gunsmoke has an option in the setting to play it with 1 button (you fire in whatever direction you are facing) but a true Gunsmoke fan (like me) hates this and would prefer having the three buttons...

I built a custom 60-in-1 CP (my first one). It has 3 buttons on each side and a 4-way/8-way switchable balltop joystick in the middle. I can post a pic of it if you want to see what I did.

You can get by with one button and multi-purpose the P1 and P2 buttons to also be B2 and B3. This sometimes is physically inconvenient, though. I only use 2 buttons on my Mr. Do! 60 in 1, but I have a 4 way joystick and only leave 44 games in the menu.

Do you mean a dbv or an actual dollar coin mech?

A dbv doesn't care what it's connected to. You just set it for 4 pulses and connect it to power and the coin switch wiring. Then go into the 60-in-1 menu and set the price per game.

BTW - make sure to connect all coin switches to the same coin input wiring (all on Coin 1 or all on Coin 2). Otherwise if you set it for 50¢ play, each switch will register as a 1/2 credit and they don't add together to make 1...

The last one i built i used one, and no trackballs.

. Yeah, i know.. made some games unplayable but i couldnt bring myself to put three buttons on a ms pac lookalike cocktail.

two buttons ought to get you done on most games

I put the joystick to the left, 3 buttons in the middle and the trackball to the right.
Officially, I lay it out to work with the Arcadeshop CP that includes a cut out for the trackball.

Of course, if you happen to be doing a Pacman cab, you may fancy one of these:

3 buttons also allows you to navigate the menu nicely.
