What games will suffer if I just use a 4 way joystick? I'm guessing the trackball games at least?....

Galaga 3, 1942, 1943, Scramble, Super Cobra and I would guess Gyruss and Time Pilot too. I'm pretty sure all those use 8-ways. Oh, and the trackball games suck with a joystick, even if it's 8-way :D

Unless you are a Scramble (or whatever) expert, you most likely won't care if you play it with a 4-way. I always build these with 4-ways. I never get a customer complaining about lack-of-8-way-motion for 1942 or whatever. But if I put in an 8-way, I'll get 100 calls complaining about the trouble they have playing Ms. Pac-Man or Donkey Kong....

I agree on just keeping it as a 4-way. From what I recall most joysticks can be switched to be 4 or 8 way by just flipping the plastic cone thingy at the bottom, correct?

I suggest try with a 4 way, if you don't like the performance, then switch to 8 way and then see how it is a pain on the 4 way games.....

Also, I wouldn't even bother with any of the trackball or spinner games if you only have a joystick.

I've ordered one of the top switchable joysticks from groovy game gear. I'll post back when i get it in. Kind of a faux ball stick. Would be really cool if it had leaf switches. It is a bit pricey at $48. I have yet to see any reviews other then on their website.

The top switchable from ultimarc seems like it would be cooler with the "pull up and turn to switch" feature, but it doesn't work well in either mode. I've changed out the micro switches but i haven't tried it since then. It's a bat stick, but a ball top and shaft is available. This joystick is $33. The optional ball top and shaft is an additional $14.
