60-1 or arcadeshop programmable

I think he means it's simpler for the USER (ie the guy playing the game), not the person installing it.

I agree that "leasing" DKII sucks ass...

whats the deal with the programming once per update? i thought it could be programed at any time??

You can reprogram the board as many times as you want...but you can only "enable" Donkey Kong II (if you paid for it) once per update. It's bullshit frankly... and one of a few reasons I won't give Steve or Arcadeshop a dime of my money... for now anyway.

im not sure im following 100% sorry for my stupidity. You can reprogram once per update. What does that mean exactly? if the board you purchase doesnt have it, then the next update you can add it? but if you have it already then is it permanent?

you can reprogram 100 times if needed, but the dk2 game can only be programmed once per download update

I'll go on record as having heard from more than one person that if you buy DKII and need to re-program it between update cycles, Steve has reset their "download" so they can do so upon request. I am not sure if he'd do that for anyone or if these folks were good customers or what.

About 2 or 3 time a year arcadeshop releases a software update for the board. This update can fix small issues or give you the ability to add some new tiltes. The board has finite memory onboard, so it can only hold roughly 35 to 40 different games at any one time. There are currently 50 horizontal title that can be written to the board, so when you do reprogram the board you have to pick which tiltes you want the board to hold. You may reprogram the board as often as you wish to change the playable games but DK2 requires that you enter a specific code to add it to your potential game list. This code only works once per update. The odd part is that the code for DK2 is specific to the individual board you own, so why not let the owner access the game for any desired reprograming?? It was paid for after all, and can't be used on another board to give the game away for free.

Hope that helps...

This is true, he did it for me. I didn't realise how it worked as I programed it the first time and had just put some sample games on the board. When I went to add the group of games I really wanted, the reality of the situation smacked me it the face.
I was nice that Steve helped me out that once but still; if the access code is specific to my board, why the security?? I did pay as much for that one game as I would for most Xbox of PS3 games.

I do not believe there is any "code" specific to the board. I think the install software simply dials in to a server on Steves side, checks to see if the ROM has been installed this update and if so, denys... but I am not 100% sure. I have two AS boards...I should try to load DK in to both sometime... one BEFORE I upgrade and one AFTER.

I have two boards as well, and when I did try the wrong code to the wrong board by accident it did not work. I caught my error and changed codes and it was fine. Unless I input it wrong the first time mistakenly, which could have been possible, it seems to work that way. But either way I'm sure we both agree that we paid for this game, it's one of the biggest perks for this board and there has just got to be a better way!!

I agree 100%. The initial STATED reason for this douchebaggery was to prevent the ROM from getting in the hands of the MAME crowd. Guess what, it's already there (Well, Misfit MAME anyway). Why still have the limitation?

For sure! I can't help but think that if the price was $100 lower, the memory was bigger and the DK2 issue was fixed, Steve would sell a lot more of these.

with the memory limitation that the board currently has, couldnt someone develop a hack for a flash card upgrade? put a cheap 2GB SD in there and there would be a ton of games.

also, if these are supposed to be legal boards (right?) then why are people continuing to reference minor issues with the games?

i really like the idea of the programmable but for the price, there are too many negatives. thats why the 48-1 is good enough for me at 1/4th the price.

The board is legal ONLY because it comes with no ROMS. Once you populate the board with ROMS, it's as illegal as the 48-in-1.

alright last stupid question then I promise im going to sleep hah.

On the AS site it says supply your own roms. Then shows the list of whats supported, so only those games can be loaded? and to my understanding only like 50 at a time. Has anyone tried to load a ROM not on that list??

You can load 38-40 at a time and only the ones listed are available via the software required to upload. The ROMS are easily acquired though...

There is currently no way to load non-supported roms.
