60-1 or arcadeshop programmable

my mame cab boots straight to the frontend and works better than the multicades i've seen. its the exact games and they take coins, though i did put in a secret credit button. i have a horizontal monitor in it, i think i would rather play vertical games on a horizontal monitor than vice versa. i have it set up with some short lists of good games, the main list isnt accessible at all from the outside of the cab. its in an old atari cab so unless you open it up, theres no way anyone would be able to tell its running mame. the roms are exact, only the hardware is emulated. game play is identical as far as i can tell. hell, some people put mame in to run a dedicated cab! (one game)

MAME is definately the plan. Frizzle's video of his set up has me into high ocd mode. I had dedicated one cpu for MAME experiments. Fresh os install. I downloaded a torrent for MAME and the roms. There must of been a virus in the torrent as my system within two days of downloading the files would not boot. It would try to boot but would blue screen and ask me to go into safe mode, last know configuration or load windows normally. Neither of them would let the system load windows. That is why I decided to multi game up while I experiment with front ends and get the cpu running stable before I build the cab. I had Mala installed when the cpu would not boot. Not to sure what the cuase was. I think after I reformat it I am going to try MAMEWAH.

Amazingly enough, all my MAME cabs (3 of them) are hooked up to REAL Happ joysticks... real happ buttons... real arcade montiors (well, 2 use real arcade monitors and my cocktail uses a PC monitor)... real Happ trackball... accurate spinner... etc.

MAME on a standard PC with keyboard controls isn't how it's supposed to be done...

Nah, your suppose to plug a joystick or controller into your PC and play, that's what I use to do. It seems silly to take a computer and hook it up to an arcade cabinet. When everyone in the world with a PC can play MAME for free. It's even worst when people try and sell it off an an arcade machine.

Here are couple of reasons why I PC in an arcade box is better than a PC with a joystick plugged in:

1) modern PC monitors don't look like arcade monitors, and even if you do have a CRT on your PC, it isn't typically set up to run at arcade resolution.
2) PCs don't sound like arcade machines. . . the cabs have a lot to do with how an arcade machine sounds.

I'm sure there are more, but that's a good start.

I agree that people shouldn't be selling MAME as anything other than what it is, but you've not experienced MAME as it's intended until you play it in an actual arcade machine. A good number of games are 100% indistinguishable from their real arcade counterpart.

is there a simple mame site for dummies???.. i have a pc that i could play with.. but i dont know if the os is good, it has issues depending on which User is selected. i would love to do it on the cheap, but i get tired of reading all of the different configurations.. just give me a list of what to do and how to do it and i would be happy..

LLet me add:

3) Playing on a PC doesn't FEEL like an arcade machine. If you're not standing in front of the cab, wrestling with the controls as hard as you want (I know, good players always use a light touch!), then it's not close to being the same experience (along with the sound and look).

well then the multiboards are even worse than that, because all they do is run mame with less games and less options.

Not getting into the MAME arguement here, just sticking with the original question.

60-1 vs Arcadeshop.

Arcadeshop board is much easier for a newb to use. No babysitting needed. If you only have one game, and are low on funds, get a 60-1. IF you are putting it amongst groups of games and you don't feel like playing arcade attendant get the Arcadeshop board.

60-1 menu sucks. 60-1 menu music is beyond suck.

That is all I have to offer.

You know Brick Top you deserve some kudos for that answer. Everytime this question is asked it becomes a Multi vs Mame fight and the original question gets lost. You got back on topic and answered the question with a quick and, as far as I'm concerned, very accurate answer.

BRAVO!

Now cut and save that answer, as I'm sure it will be needed again...
and again...

hey guys, I see a lot of debate about start up times, how long does the 60n1 take and how long does the AS take? gimme seconds or something not "long"

60-in-1 - I'd venture a guess of about 30 seconds

Arcadeshop - It's on before the monitor warms up enough to show a picture.

Either filter those games out or deal with the black bars and smaller picture. I use a PC monitor in my cab and I don't mind the black bars, though ultimately I'll build another mame cab for horizontal games. Don't know how well that works on arcade monitors though.

My MAME cabinet has a rotating monitor.

But, when I want to play a vertical game on it and don't feel like taking the (admittedly seconds) time to rotate the monitor, I play vertical games in horizontal mode with the bezel displayed in "crop" mode which shows the scren of the game from top to bottom, but the bezel displays on the sides which actually adds to the feel.

just a question.. i dont have a 60-1, but i do have a 48-1..

why is the AS board much easier for a newb? i would think there is more involved for a newb because you have to program the board.

Also why do you need to play arcade attendant with the 60-1?

my 48-1 menu is okay.. the menu music you can shut off.

one of the biggest issues for me with the AS board (besides the price) is that the DKII issue. if i bought the DKII, i can only reprogram the board one time until the next AS update. DKII would definitely be a game i would always want..
