Hello,

I have a 6 in 1 installed in a Midway cabinet. Originally the 6-1 was from years ago when you had to mod it for MK games. I never heard an audio pop when changing sources or during games. I converted it to a MAME cab, and after many years decided to make this one back to dedicated with switcher and use another for MAME. I grabbed one of the newer switchers which uses holding both START buttons instead of a remote. I get popping sounds during the switching of games, and during some louder sound affects and had some questions.

1 - this is just damaging the speaker or potentially harming the boards and monitor as well?
2 - Is this more likely and issue with the speaker wiring or potentially something with the switcher?

any thoughts?

Following up. Anybody with 6-1s have this issue? I replaced speaker wire, which seems to have fixed the popping with loud sounds, but switching I get the same issue. The speaker wire is spliced due to being cut and I have the new one to speaker connected and connected to cabinet wiring via one of those wago wire connects so not sure if I should adjust that, and go old school wire nuts possibly.

those don't have -5V connected, did you do the jumper wire mod connecting the JAMMA edge -5V to all the game slots?

Great question. The original switcher is well over 10 years old. It was modded and I had no issues with it, just did not want to have to use it with the remote anymore so I picked up a new one from RiddledTV and it said it had -5V power supported and switched already included. Am I still suppose to make modifications to that one? Thanks for the response.

I have a multi Kombat setup with riddledTV ez switcher, but even with a single board connected, my Kombat pcbs pop when started. It's decently loud but nothing I have ever worried about.

-Edit: I didn't realize that sounds were changing and popping during gameplay either. I would verify boards independently to make sure it isn't specific to the board. My sounds boards are flaky and cause sound increases sometimes. I have an NBA JAM TE also running in that cabinet that I need

-5V power is already switched. no mods are necessary. There's no sophisticated or amplified sound circuitry on my switchers. It uses a literal relay that physically connects and disconnects the gameboards from the speaker wires. On some games, that may cause a small pop to occur. It's similar to if you unplugged and plugged your speakers while a game was powered on. Or perhaps more similar to unplugging the Jamma connector from one gameboard and plugging it into another gameboard with the power staying on. I can't imagine a scenario where that would cause any speaker damage with the small-sized amps and the types of speakers these games use.

I'm not sure what would be causing popping sounds during normal game play. The only thing I can guess is that you're exceeding the limits of the audio amp on that particular gameboard, and clipping is occurring. Perhaps try plugging that game directly into the Jamma harness and let me know if it still pops at the same moments during gameplay.

It sounds like you already answered my 2nd comment regarding popping of audio during gameplay. I should have read the whole thread before responding. I prefer soldering of wires over any connectors when it comes to speaker wiring, but any solid connection is probably fine.

Thanks all for the responses. I feel better about it what is happening now. I will be going through each connected game just to make sure all is well with all connections, but appreciate the feedback. Sounds like its not a real concern like I was thinking. Just did not want to damage anything.
