I started re-working my MultiJAMMA last night.

I removed Clay's 8-in-1 (I don't like that it keeps all 8 boards powered up at once), and then started mounting the 6-in-1 board in the cab, and the main 6 PCBs I plan on using.

I still have enough room to mount another board or two in case i want to switch stuff up. Right now I'm waiting on some JAMMA extension cables to show up so I can finish hooking everything up and then test it out.

Cool!
I love my 6-in-1 switcher and have had no problems with it. I like how it doesn't keep all the boards powered up, too. I don't mind waiting the extra moment for the individual boards to power up when switching from game to game.

I recently got a Double Dragon board, but the sound didn't work. Duh, I needed the -5v for the sound but didn't have the slots wired for it when I got the switcher. So, I pulled my switcher and wired up the -5v for all the slots. Works great now.

Clays kit is usually touted as the best. Is it really that big of a deal to have the boards powered? They use what... a tenth of an amp each?

The issue is that the inside of the cabinet got hot as hell with 8 boards in there all powered up at once along with the 2nd power supply.

Once this thing is wired up and reliably running I'll be selling off Clay's kit.

Nothing a 120mm exhaust fan couldn't fix. Be prepared... the jammaboards.com switcher sucks ass from the many of reports I have read.

I had other issues with Clay's (a few boards that would work normally wouldn't run through his multiJAMMA). Maybe I just like the idea of this one as it's way easier to set up -- no second power supply, no extra computer cables, or special power plugs. Just extra JAMMA extensions.

I've heard bad things about some of their other products (mostly wiring related), but I haven't read many complaints about the Jammaboards 6-in-1 switcher. The one downside I've read about is that the -5 isn't wired to pass through (but I got this as an X-mas gift, and had them order it with that -5 mod pre-done).

If it does suck I'll probably finally give up on the idea of a multi JAMMA and just make the cab into a Snow Bros or a Black Tiger.

I was going to do a multi-jamma set up a couple years back. I was going to convert a Dynamo HS cab with the PCB area accessible from the front (control panel) so I could swap out boards at will.

I then realized... why? I have a MAME cab that will play all the JAMMA games I want to play... and then some... all via a really slick menu.

:)

Good luck! I hope the jammaboards product lives up to your expectations.

Yeah, I know I could do MAME instead, probably for less $, but I'd rather have the real PCBs in there.

I'm with you there. I'm doing it with my NBA Jam TE. I got mine with the -5V installed (should've just done it myself) and then wired in the diodes as well for the service switch. I tried to jam my TMNT board in there with my NBA Jam, but it was too tight of a fit and just too awkward. I ordered 2 extension harnesses from Mike's Arcade to see if that would help. I also have The Simpsons getting delivered today or tomorrow. I'm hoping the TMNT and Simpsons are the same size since they're both Konami, and can just install those directly into the board and use the extension for NBA JAM. I'll report on it's ability to handle it all once I get it altogether. I'm really hoping I don't have to add diodes to each of the 3rd and 4th player harnesses...that would be a royal PITA. So far, I have 1 bad wire in one fo the 4th player harnesses, but it might just be an easy fix.

What does the -5V mod entail? I need to do it to mine, in addition to adding better relays. I've been using mine with 3 IT boards (using jamma ext harnessess) in a multi-trackball cabinet for going on 4 years.

I tried building my own upright racking system with Clay's kit, and it worked out, but it wasn't as stable as I liked, and I found I really didn't switch boards that often. So this time around I just bit the bullet and figured I'd mount everything to the walls, and use a bunch of Jamma extensions.

Here's what this cab looked like with my old rack system:

They just jumper a wire from the edge connector to the -5 solder points for each of the slots (at least I believe that's it). It would be pretty simple to do yourself. I can pull the board back out of the cab if you want a picture of what they did to the PCB.

The TMNT and Simpsons will fit next to each other in the slots. I've plugged in all my boards to the 6-in-1 (all Konami except for a Data East) with no problems.

I got my jamma extensions and threw them in the cab:

and had everything routed through the 6-in-1:

Power it up... and nothing. Testing individual boards works fine, but when I hook it back up through the 6-in-1 it's like the power supply goes crazy (and I switched in a brand new switching power supply and had the same issue).

+5 when hooked up to a single board:

WTF?!?

As strange as this sounds I had the exact same issue. I pulled the boards and reseated them and they worked fine. Also if you use JAMMA extension harnesses, you will run into issues...Or at least I did along with others.

I managed to fit MK, MKII, UMK3 and MK4 all in a row. The UMK and MK4 have heatsinks which come with in a milimeter of the next board. I put War Gods in slot 6 just for spacing.
