$510 for a Galaga '88 Marquee, WTF?!!

I hadn't thought of it this way, but it makes perfect sense. Thanks Mr. Gorf.

Tom

I never accept second chance offers for the simply reason that I feel ebay does it unfairly. Say I put in a max bid of $100, but currently I am winning at $50. If someone bids $99 and I win at $100 then fine - thats what it cost to win. If someone bids $101 that pushes my bid to my max of $100. If the winner backs out, the second chance offer would be for $100, but in my mind it should be for $50, which is what the leading bid was before the non-payer bid.

LyonsArcade took a bad (unpopular?) position at first, and now is doubling down on defending it. Happens all the time on the internet.

And I can't believe no has posted this yet. Do I have to do everything around here?

And since this thread may go epic, hit me with some rep points if Monty made you laugh. Click the scales there in the upper right next to the red triangle. I'm stuck on 2 karma balls and it's bugging me.

Does anybody know if this is most dollars for a marquee? Wow!

I sold a marquee earlier this year for much, much more than $510. It was something you could call truly rare as I had the only one known to exist.

Some collectors will pay for the hard to find/rare stuff. I used to do that back when I was really into collection machines.

Ok, Stephen... now that you mentioned it, you've gotta spill the beans. Which marquee was it? You don't have to mention what it went for...just curious the title.

I'm sure the prices paid for rare NOS parts and art would receive a negative reaction and/or a measure of disbelief from some folks. And this is understandable. However there are deep pocketed collectors out there willing to pay for rare items in the condition they are looking for. My pockets are pretty empty, but I've forked out for numerous nos parts and art over the years. I'll disclose being guilty of paying $350 each for a nos Frontline Spinner, nos Frontline monitor glass and probably the most silly of all, $350 for original legs for my crazy climber cocktail table. I don't regret any of these purchases and would gladly do them again :D

THIS! The second chance offer system rewards dishonest sellers that use shill accounts to uncover max bid amounts. I can't believe eBay hasn't ever addressed this, but then again many of eBay's policies seem intent on running the company into the ground.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying shilling was going on in this auction, just supporting a very valid point for being wary of second chance offers.

Kinda been said twice already but when a second chance offer is put out, it should be treated as if the winning bid was completely cancelled.

In doing that the last high amount would be the winning bid.

If the high bidder cancels his bid it drops to the previous high bid, not neccessarily the second bidders max bid.

...Vectorbeam Scramble

"Known to exist" is a hard statement to make, especially if you don't speak German. 65 of these machines were sent to Germany, so at least that many have existed.

This why I always snipe at the last 5 seconds. I put in the max what I am willing to pay and if I lose oh well. Then I avoid all that tomfoolery.

I've been known to throw some crazy snipe bids..if its something I have to have...you always run the risk that you will have to pay way above the perceived value..but that is the risk with sniping..personally never been mad when bid goes higher on snipe...hey I put in the amount..so I live with it...

and Francis is one of the most hard core buyers when its something he wants...so no need to continue on that one..if he bids and win..he will pay....end of story. If you equate it to cage fighting I wouldn't want to be in the ring with Francis on something Atari...:D
