Yesterday & Today records in Rockville MD sells newer music on 45`s.

Personally I`ve tried to stop buying any wax until I get the time to sort out the 1000`s of records I already have.

Wurco.com isn't working...

...and yesterday & today records have prices as high or higher than ebay! $12.00 for an AC/DC single? Really? That is normal?

Frizz, Are you looking for a bunch of records or a select few? I have a buddy that owns 2 record stores but they are not online. They have tons of stuff. Send me a list and I can try to fill it for ya. It will give me a reason to go see my buddies also. Let me know.

Some of the stuff is a bit pricey, but you can pretty much find anything there... it's a collection of several different independent record stores.

Oh and I would say post what you're looking for here as well, I've picked up a few singles here from other KLOV members.

Cool... I'll put together a list...

Briefly:

Beastie Boys - Anything from Licensed to Ill
NWA - Anything from their first Album
Slayer - Anything
Metallica - Anything from Kill em all to In Justice
Primus - Just about anything
Cypress Hill - I wanna Get High or Hits From The Bong
The Animals - House of the Rising Sun
The Doors - Anything really
Iron Maiden - Anything from the early years
Iron Butterfly - In a Gadda Da Vida
Black Sabbath - Anything from the Ozzy Era
Queen - We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions/Another One Bites The Dust/Bohemian Rhapsody
Devo - Whip It
Grandmaster Melle Mel - White Line

Man that is going to be tough list, some of those bands didn't even release 7inch records and if they did they were a limited cut in UK. Have you seen records for those bands or is it just bands you want in the juke? Tough ones: Slayer, Beasties, Primus, Iron Maiden. I sent the list to my buddy so we will see.

Just some music I like and remember BITD... no research at all...

I've seen some Beastie on ebay... and yeah, the Slayer is super expensive and mostly 12" vinyl...

If you go to CAX this year there are a couple record stores in San Jose that have a lot of 45's. Streetlight Records and Rasputin. Much more fun to shop in a record store and cheaper.

I've been record digging for many many years now and the best way to do it is to go to local thrift stores and record stores. That's where all the good deals are. Record spots are getting harder to find but every little town has its spots. If you're looking for something specific, eBay is often the best place.

Looking at your list, some of that stuff is around and some isn't. The Beasties put out a a lot of 7"s in 86 (New Style, Paul Revere, Fight for your Right, Brass Monkey, Hold it Now, She's On It etc. etc.) Almost every cut on that album came out on 45. White Lines has a 45. Back in the early to mid 80s the 12" singles were just starting to gain ground so almost all of the singles had short version 45 7" counterparts. That started to change in the late 80s and early 90s when you saw a lot more 12"s and the 7"s dropping off (except for in punk music where it maintained as a cultural thing.) This is especially true in hip hop. DJs prefer scratching with 12"s, plus you get instrumentals, remixes and acapellas on 12"s. I doubt you'll find much in the way of 7"s for hip hop past 86 or so.

Even when you find 7"s from the late 80s and early 90s they are more likely to be small hole limited sort of things. I'm not even sure Primus putout any 7"s. NWA is unlikely to have much. Forget about Cypres on 7"

You'll find all sorts of Doors 7"s because of the time period. Back then the album was like an afterthought to the singles.

Queen, Devo, all that stuff is easy to come by. You should be able to find early metal on 7" but those records tend to get bought up quickly so eBay might be your best bet there.

Anyway, the best guage of whether you'll find something on 7" is the year it came out. The 60s and 70s are full of stuff, with a lot of cool b-sides. Up through the mid 80s there were a lot of 45s and then they started to fall off. Some of the more "hip" bands kept putting out 7"s as a promotional thing but the numbers are not that big and the rarity goes up.

It all depends on your personal 'Want to own : Want to pay ratio'

Many of those titles are out there but you have to hunt long and hard to find a good deal. I go to old book stores and rummage sales, you can sometimes find them for $0.50 - $1.00 but it's usually the same old stuff. Bee Gees, Neil Diamond, Tom Jones, etc... You don't usually find many good ones but they are out there. Rummage sales are the best, you can sometimes get thewhole box for $5!

And forget about finding Iron Maiden, Metallica or Slayer ones for that price. (They tend to go much higher, like 10 to 20 times higher) Most heavy metal 45's were imports so they will have the small center hole. You'd have to drill em out to play in most jukeboxes. Sometimes it's a tough decision to drill out a record that costs you $15-$20.

Happy hunting!

I have purchased a bunch of 45 records lots on ebay. I got one box of about 400 records for about 20.00. Cherry picked about 30 and put the box back on ebay and sold it for 80.

For stuff that is only available with the small hole, do you guys cut out a big hole?

With the exception of slayer and primus, most of it should be easy to find. You might have to pay a bit for the Metallica and Iron Maiden though.

You have to be careful, some of the ones that have the small hole run at 33 1/3 rpm instead of 45 (some jukeboxes will automatically step the speed down on these too, so it may not be an issue) so unless you're partial to "The Chipmunks" I would recommend doublechecking to make sure...
Also it can be difficult to center the hole perfectly when you drill it out.
