Hi;
I've done the 4164 Mod on my Robotron, my Clay Multigame and my Blaster but never on a Turkey Shoot.
Has anyone done this mod on their Turkey Shoot?
I searched the archives and nothing has been posted regarding the mod being performed on a TS.
I am under the impression that it can be done on all Williams PCBs' but I rather get confirmation before doing it to my game.
Thank you
Jeff

You have to isolate the 4164 chips from the +12v and -5v signals and jumper one pin - I forget if it's +5 or gnd you jumper it to...

I haven't seen a 4116 system yet that didn't work with the 4164 upgrade. There's enough slop in the timing on the old systems that it works.

There is also a mod that involves cutting two traces on the back side of the board. I personally like this method. Very easy to undo as well. I think it might have been mspaeth's idea. I could be wrong. Sorry,no link right now. Not home.

Thanks guys for the responses and links.
I really wanted to know if anyone had done the 4164 mod on a TS using the adapter plug:

I really don't want to cut any traces on the PCB but it might be the easiest way..........
I'll most likely bench the board and see where the voltages go and if there are any other items using the -5vdc or the +12vdc on the PCB.
I'll post the results.
Thanks again
Jeff

If you go the adapter route (like I did on my defender), you can buy one of those adapters really cheap from Peale's store if you don't want to make one.

Re: 4164 Mod - Turkey Shoot (RAM Error??)

I finally had a chance to go over the video PCB. I checked and to the best of my knowledge, the only ICs' that use the -5vdc and +12vdc are the 4116 RAM.
The easiest method to convert the TS to use the 4164s' in this case is:
>From 2P3, pull pins 9 and 10.
On 2J3, underneath the PCB, connect pins 8 and 9
This removes the -5vdc and +12vdc supply and bridges +5vdc into the +12vdc trace, thereby supplying +5vdc to the 4164........

I replaced the connector using Trifurcon pins, (my favorite) to insure a good connection.

But I still have the same problem as when I started. I boot the game and get 4 rug pattern passes and the 5th one locks up:

I tried it a couple more times and the same problem as when I had the 4116s' in. I also get some error codes from the LED display.
In the order received:
8-1-2-1-7-2-1-7-2-1-7-3
I'm guessing that ROM 17 and the CMOS is bad, what do you think?
Merry Christmas
Jeff

Re: 4164 Mod - Turkey Shoot (RAM Error??)

Have you pulled the roms and verified them?

Re: 4164 Mod - Turkey Shoot (RAM Error??)

I also received a "3" at the end of the initial tests which would indicate a CMOS error. I am going to replace that and see what happens next.
Would a bad ROM cause the initial RAM test to fail?
Thanks
Jeff

Re: 4164 Mod - Turkey Shoot (RAM Error??)

Unlikely, I would think the diagnostics would report a rom error if the checksum failed. Is there a manual for this board online?

Thanks for the link.

During the RAM test, it goes from screen to screen. I assume that each rug pattern screen in the test for one out of the 24 RAM?
So, if the test stops on the 5th rug pattern, does this mean that the ram / socket in that location is bad? I already replaced all the RAM which would indicate the socket or something else associated with that RAM has failed.
Do you know have the RAM test functions, the order of the RAM tested?
If I could isolate the RAM / component causing the RAM test to halt, it would make life easier...
Otherwise, I should be getting the NVRAM replacement from Mark shortly and I'll replace the CMOS and try again.

HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR......
