is there anyway to hook up a spinner for tempest on the 412n1 vert pcb?

Check the pinout on the spinner. Supply it the proper voltage. Wire your directions to L and R on the JAMMA harness. I see no reason why that would not work.

do you know what the 4 wires to the tempes spiner are? left right 5v and ground????

Because yaggy says it won't!

You connect to J6 (next to VGA connector)

pin1 - blk/gnd
pin4 - sense -
pin5 - sense +
pin6 - red/+5

don't worry if you get polarity of 4&5 wrong at first, just make sure you get the others right.

Interesting. I've wired a trackball like that.

Guy in other thread will sell tempest spinner and destroy a perfectly good tempest.

I've indeed seen certain games do that, for sure.
I just remember these bootlegs having separate connectors.

Yes that's how the 412 in 1's are, they have the seperate connector like you mentioned, the 60 in 1's you can do the left right thing like the other guy mentioned.

is this the Game Elf 412-in-1?

The manual I'm looking at J6 has pin 1 +5v, and pin 10 gnd. Then right next to it there is a diagram for a trackball 6p connector with only 6 pins that seems to match what you say, but the only connector with 6 pins is JP7 which is unlabeled and doesn't provide 5v. I'm very confused. No matter how I connect to J6, I can only get either linear horizontal or vertical motion. I can't get rotational motion.

I suspect that they've set the tempest controls up for a trackball, not a spinner. IOW, a regular spinner will only move in x or y direction. However, you may be able to connect the spinner to both X and Y and fool it into working, at least for tempest. In any other game (i suspect), the spinner would make the character move in a diagonal direction.

Edit - The more i think of it, the less i think it'll work, if it is truly set up for a trackball, then when the cannon is on the bottom right hand side, it'd be looking for an up in the y direction to move up, when the cannon moves over to the top left side, it'd be looking for a down movement to move the cannon down. Unfortunately, you'd have to move the spinner in the opposite direction to keep moving counterclockwise (if indeed its set up for a trackball).
Having said that, is there per chance a setting that you might could change for spinner vs trackball?

just in general---- hooking up a trackball to the 412 in 1 gives cruddy play results.
Uses the extra connector, unlike the ArcadeSD where you hook the trackball directly to the UDLR for player 2 on jamma harness.

I've never tried tempest on it to see if they have it setup for trackball (or 1/2 of it to be a spinner) or joystick.

a pi-jamma is likely in your future. :)

I looked through all the settings in game config mode and I don't see an option for changing the mode to spinner. I'm trying to get it working in Mad Planets and Tron. Maybe I can hack the software on the SD card to change the config.

buy a 412 trackball harness , mod the harness to fit spinner , spinner is 1/2 trackball .
Hard to make the harness yourself since it has a very small connector on the board , I made trackball harness for 412 once , it was pain .
412 trackball harness wires color is not standard , you will to use multi meter to find +5v and ground .
