So what is the deal with this game. It's super ass expensive, not much different than the Genesis version and pretty easy to beat. So why the HELL do I want it?
While I am pondering that question, please help me with this one...

What are the differences in boards? Which one is more rare?
I know there is a US and a Japanese version.
There is also a conversion too? JAMMA CPS1?

Anyone with some good background on this game, please chime in.

The arcade has better graphics and is a lot harder. It's not impossible but it isn't a cake walk. I'm not really sure what the differences in the boards are for certain. More knowledgeable people will be awake soon.
The conversion boards are just rom swaps of certain CPS boards. The only ones I know definitely work are Final Fight and Street Fighter World Warrior.

Cool. But the conversion boards play the same, look the same and sound the same? It's just not on a "dedicated" board?

I still wonder about the JAP and US versions. I don't think there is any talking, so I would not have to worry about that.

The Japanese version is called DaiMakaiMura, 大魔界村. As far as I know, that's the only difference. I don't think there are any graphical or gameplay differences.

One thing I've reading from searching for information is that one reason they're so rare is because so many were converted to Street Fighter II when the boom started.

A modern conversion is almost worthless to a collector, because it's just a cheap game like Street Fighter II with copied ROMs, so its value is just that of whatever it was converted from. I was sold what I was told was original, it had copied EPROMs, I was not happy.

Anyway I sold that and now mostly play the X68000 version until I can get an original, but they're very expensive here in Japan.

MY 2 cents is that basically ghosts n goblins was a hit or at least well received by people who frequented arcades. I have fond memories of the game and own one.

Ghosts and ghouls was more or less the sequel that had better graphics and in a few aspects was a bit harder but for the most part was actually not as challenging as the original. To me in a lot of ways it's like remaking a movie with better graphics since a lot of the game seems to be closely taken from the original and just dreamed up as slightly more modern looking than presenting a new challenge with regards to game play.

The artwork on the cab is pretty bad ass and the game is fun but IMO it's only an ok game as a whole. It's not really that common although I saw it around enough BITD.

I think being fun and looking cool coupled with memories from BITD plus the rarity of the game or boards makes the game sell for what it does. As for legit boards vs hacked/modified boards it simply comes down to some people wanting to pay more to say they have the original. The game plays the same on both. Hell I even think there is a version that came out on PS2 that plays exactly the same so technically the game can be played/had cheap for the actual enjoyment of the game.

Like many other games of the era it mostly suffers from the fact that in a home environment you can keep giving more credits to get further or beat the game. To me this takes a lot away from these games as they become less skill and more mindless walk throughs that simply require you to continue to hit the coin switch. I find that game of this type get little to no play in my collection and lose their luster quickly.

Find a friend who has one and play theirs all the way through and you'll likely have no need to ever play the game again.

Ok, I guess someone needs to educate me about CPS1.

I thought all CPS1 games/roms were interchangeable, like a cartridge?

See, this is good conversation. Personally I do not like Ghosts N Goblins, but love Ghouls... no idea why.

I have been vacillating (look it up, use it) on getting a dedicated board OR just saying screw it and having it on a XXX in 1. I love the artwork and have most of it. It's just expensive.

Not sure if there is a difference between the version on the XXX in 1 board or between the dedicated one???

More importantly, educate me on how to turn my Final Fight board into a Ghouls and Ghosts.

Graphically other than the title screen they are the same, the sound is the same. Gameplay wise, Daimakaimura is more difficult.

You can swap the roms board B and C board to another motherboard just fine. Some later games use a 12mhz cpu instead of a 10mhz cpu, but it will work just fine regardless. Only the speed of the game being a bit faster or slower.
But you cant just exchange the maskroms and eproms around and expect it to work. Unless both games are using the same PPU on the C board (the small daughter board) and the same type of B board.

i just converted a sf2 HF pcb to ghouls n ghosts. total cost was about 85$ for both the pcb and everything to convert. Tighe and dbstallman have great knowledge for doing the conversion and both helped me make it possible. I love the game, I prefer it over ghosts n goblins.

Capcom converted some boards themselves that are called resale conversions and have some hard to copy metallic stickers on the roms .

You want the real thing it will cost $ 400 +, a conversion is worth a SF2 board , about $ 35,- worth of roms and some work, a original resale conversion is somewhere in between .

I like the game more than the Hellish Ghost n Goblins bastard of a game .
