they seem to be stuck on there pretty good, but I'm sure they will come off. Any ideas why they are on there in the first place if they dont actually serve a purpose?

Whoever put those on there was building his own harness to use player 3 and player 4. This is what we call in the gaming world as a "hack"; not too uncommon but annoying...

Buy the correct harnesses after you get those off and you should be good to go.
