3DS thread

I had a GI subscription for YEARS, starting with the issue with MKII. My only problem with it was that it was so thin (I think it's gotten bigger over the years [that's what she said]). But yeah, I always thought it was a pretty good magazine.

I sure hate GameStop though.

I worked for Game Crazy for abou 4 years until they went under. It was up and down with them. My store went through managers like no one's business.

The first (and best) manager I ever had was promoted to District manager, and once the company started downsizing, they got rid of him in favor of some newer DM. Since they can pay the new guy less. He went back to a store manager position at a different store until we closed.

I have never been to Play N' Trade, but, that's where the magager I liked went. I keep meaning to stop in.

I'll put in my two cents worth:

If you consider yourself a Nintendo fanboy, definitely get the 3DS, but be warned, there will be masses of other fans ahead of you in the line. No stores will be able to stock the thing.

All reports say the 3D works great, I personally can't wait to get my eyes on that.

But, if you are like me and got a little disappointed with how things went with the Wii, it is worth pointing out how Nintendo runs their business and how that will affect the 3DS.

For example, you mentioned watching 3D movies on the 3DS. It is not going to be what you expect. Nintendo does not have the financial clout to handle the licensing side of such a service. At best, I can see Nintendo figuring out a way to stream 3D movies from your Wii's Netflix account to your 3DS in your house, but forget the notion of carrying 3D movies in your pocket.

I'm surprised how few people have mentioned here the complete lack of launch titles. What games are you going to get Day 1? The only one that would interest me is Street Fighter IV and even that might be hard to pull off with the controls (I know it uses the touchpad but does it use the analog controller or the d-pad?).

Again, if you're a Nintendo fan and enjoy the idea of buying Ocarina of Time or Starfox ... again ... then absolutely, go for it. It is looking like first-party efforts for the 3DS will largely be ports (and even third party if you include Metal Gear and Dead or Alive). Personally I'm growing uninterested in Nintendo re-re-re-releasing games I have already paid for and played.

Finally, one major fact about the 3DS that has been part of the design worries me. No, not the fact that it takes longer to charge it up (3.5 hours) then to drain the battery (3 hours). It is the fact that the 3D can be adjusted and even turned off if the player chooses.
This is a good idea in that some gamers have vision issues and won't be able to enjoy the 3D-ness of a lot of games so at least with this slider they are not left out of the experience.
But it is also a bad idea because it basicallty means all games designed for the 3DS cannot rely on the 3D element for any games. It will always be purely optional. Going by other elements that Nintendo has deemed optional on their other consoles (like online multiplayer) this is seriously going to hamstring developers.

Just my opinion.

As for the Wii, everyone made fun of me for waiting 10 hours as first in line to get one. A year later, when no one else I knew had one yet, I was the one laughing :p

My brother and I waited out over night in the cold at Target. We ran into the store, grabbed our Wiis and copies of Zelda: TP and went straight home to play Wii Play. At the time, it was so awesome and felt so worth it for that stretch of time when Wiis were sold out everywhere. Looking back though, I just think to myself, "What the hell was I thinking?" I rarely play my Wii nowadays. :)

I'm preordering the 3DS through Amazon. I'm trying to avoid any possible lines, which there probably won't be due to the price tag and kids already owning a DS/DSL/DSi/DSiXL. I'm antsy to play it though. All the demo videos with the disclaimer "3D effects only visible on 3DS." I may just wait out until some more titles come out. Launch titles seem weak. It will be preloaded with apps that use the 3D feature and I can play my DS games again (I sold my DSi).

I dont think being a fanboy has anything to do with it, I cant afford a 3d tv and this is the next best thing! haha jk, I am looking forward to this because it is a giant leap from the ds lite that I own. never had a dsi so I cant comment on that but so far its not like they just said "hey heres a ds lite with 3d" that would not have interested me, this has an analog stick, gyroscope, 3 cameras, AR cards, and 3d. I wish I had an analog control on my ds lite.

All reports say the 3D works great, I personally can't wait to get my eyes on that.

Well I have heard the same, nothing but good things, I have even heard people rant and rave about it after they bashed it, so that has to mean something good!

Well, I think I read somewhere early it was supposed to ship with how to train your dragon, yea I know this isnt a list but If this is the case then who knows if its on a card or on the system. I know there also are other 3d movies said to be released, again not sure how and this was all early early interviews before it had a price and release date.
I wouldnt have a problem with netflix in 3d. that would be awesome, though I dont think netflix has 3d except blu ray if they do (I am a netflix customer, jsut not sure) And I dont have a wii so that would suck if it was just from the wii's instant cue.

Have you read somewhere that movies on a cart are out of the question?? I wouldnt mind this is they could be downloaded.

Read some articles on ssf4, and watch some interviews!! the touch pad is very optional and can even be turned off in search settings when playing online. Its considered a simple mode like on games now a days, the d pad is a definite yes as well as the analog.

Theres a bunch of "re-releases" but there not the same, I dont think the starfox is gonna be starfox 643d. at least I hope not. I know there making 2 new resident evil games and a couple others I have seen are new.

I think maybe we will see more down the line, its a new concept (in handhelds) so maybe thats why it has a slow start? I think the wii had a slow start as well. I had one since launch and I had about 5 games for a longgggg time.. then 75.

I am not sure about this, If I were nintendo I would kind of make it a point to at least incorporate the 3d, other wise it would just be a ds game, which I never read was done with production? So I think anything for the 3ds will have something in it.

Hope that helped, you make some very good points that scare me ! lol

oh, and nothing was bigger than the line for call of duty black ops.. but when you used to work at the store and everyone knows you, you kinda skip that sort of thing :)

Have you read somewhere that movies on a cart are out of the question?? I wouldnt mind this is they could be downloaded.

The editors at IGN discussed the movie idea on their Nintendo Voicechat podcast about two weeks ago and Fran Mirabella, who has been following Nintendo for years, says the licensing costs, the storage requirements, and the battery drain would conclude, for him, that the 3D movies they showed at E3 were merely demos of what the handheld was capable of, like a tech demo, but in his opinion (and I concede he would know more than me on all this) unless Nintendo have some huge secret technology and licensing deal goldmine these short videos will remain just short videos, not "Avatar-in-your-pocket".

I really hope I'm wrong about all of this, if it does all Nintendo are promising, I'll get one too, but I'm concerned that Nintendo aren't actually promising any specific, just like they have been doing for a bunch of stuff lately (Virtual Console Arcade, Vitality Sensor, motion control in games which also seem to have disappeared from the Wii releases, etc.)

well I google searched it and I guess it had a trailer of how to train your dragon in 3d. which seems stupid as hell if there not gonna actually release em. Also you make a great point with battery life. I didnt think about that.

Also about the little virtrual arcade on the 3ds, they only have said gameboy and gameboy color.. I dont think were gonna get the actual virtual console.. which would be the greatest thing ever

im also wondering if buying a second to sell on ebay is worth it? 4 million launch consoles, 1.5 in japan, japans sold out of preorders and the prices for a jp console is insane..

Ooops sorry, I wasn't very clear when I mentioned Virtual Console Arcade there. When I say Nintendo "have been doing for a bunch of stuff lately (Virtual Console Arcade" what I mean is Virtual Console Arcade for the Wii was another example of how Nintendo throw something out on a press release that everyone thinks will be awesome and then hardly ever do anything with it.

I am not referring to the handheld Virtual Console thing that 3DS is promising though it wouldn't surprise me if that service gets very little support in the long run as well.

sounds like a fun toy.. and my eyes are hawking it..
Am I missing something because I swear this is the worst launch line up for game titles ever..
Every single game is a remake of something that is already out.. ugg..

You're not missing anything Chad. It is a terrible launch lineup.

Very few Nintendo licensed games, but I have hope they'll start releasing some good titles. I don't think some of the ones listed on the 3DS site are even launch titles. Ex. Zelda: OoT, Kid Icarus, etc.

I may just hold off on buying any 3DS games. Don't want to pay $30-40 for a game just to try it out and never play it again. Like I said, there will be plenty of features to toy around with and your old DS games to hold you off until better titles release.

Thanks Osver. You've confirmed Chad and my thoughts about the launch titles. Man, lame. Here are some more I looked up:

4/1
Rayman 3D

4/15
Balloon Pop 2

5/3
DualPenSports
Pinball Hall of Fame: Williams Collection

5/17
DoA

6/1
Shin Megami Tensei

6/7
Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions

Dude, when are the good titles coming out? Most likely Holiday 2011. Man, more waiting. Grumble.

Yes totally worst launch in all of gaming history lol.

We will have to watch Japans reaction in 3 days till launch!

yea pending how the japan launch goes, depends if I buy more than one

Also as far as I know the only game with a definite release date is ssf4 and nintendogs.. nothing else is determined. There under the title "launch window" I saw asphalt was stated around june, and never even seen the ghost recon, so not sure if those are all launch titles.. Also ridge racer says 2 days after launch.. which seems stupid? so who knows? I guess we gotta wait and see

Those 18 were called out as launch titles by Nintendo in a press release yesterday. The EA titles actually release before the system... Which makes no sense.

ah nice!! thanks, I went to reserve some games yesterday and thats the story I got, plus the dates were outta wack. but from someone I knew not some random kid working lol
