3DS Buyer's Remorse or "How I Learned to Stop Living with Nintendo"

For the record i've never played the 3DS, PSP or any of the other portable crap that came out in the last 20+ years.

Good to know you dismiss things as crap without trying them. There are some fantastic games out there for the various handhelds, and I've spent way more time with my DS/PSP/3DS than I have with my Wii/360.

Agreed. I don't see how you can have an opinion on something you've never even tried? You missed the whole concept and purpose behind a handheld portable gaming system. It's not meant to replace home consoles, but be an alternative method of gaming. Most obvious, gaming on the go. If you're a fan of video games, I dare you to try out the GBA, DS or PSP and their most popular titles and tell me you didn't enjoy it even a little bit.

If you gauge games solely on how big the screen is and how great the graphics are, then you must have missed out on a lot of good games in the past 20+ years. But I know every gamer has their preference of genres and such. I won't make any assumptions of what games you like to play, but looking at your list of arcade games, you have Bad Dudes and P.O.W in there. I can list over 50 handheld games that are most likely better than both that most guys in here would agree with.

+1...again

Name pretty much any handheld game released in the past 15 years by a reputable publisher, and it's probably better than either of those.

Any handheld released in the last 5 years looks and sounds better than those games scaled up on a 19" monitor, that doesn't have horizontal hold, is B&W and using original game boy speakers. lol

No offense, everyone has their opinion.

If handheld gaming was 2nd rate in any way - they wouldn't be outselling the home consoles buy 20 million plus. They've sold 150 million DS systems, and 70 million PSP's - Trust me, Nintendo and Sony are putting money into developing good games. LOL

Well now I have seen three different websites all talking about how Nintendo might be making a new 3DS, one that "tones down" the 3D element and possibly adds a second analog stick.

So what does this mean for the 3DS? Has it been a failure that Nintendo themselves want to change? If not, why these rumored changes? This would be different from a "3DS Lite" these changes sound more like 3DS-without-the-3D.

Now I am definitely picking one up .... in January when it's in the bargain bin.

Thoughts

Honestly, if they had just released a more powerful hardware without the 3D and content/software support, I would have been fine with it. But Nintendo is always trying to be different and innovative, which has helped them in the past. Just isn't the case with the 3DS since they jumped the gun with the launch a few months ago.

If they do release a 3DS with the 3D played down that has more features and fixes some of the consumer complaints (i.e. battery life) and is affordable, now you're talking. I think that's something developers and gamers alike could be on board with.

I guess we'll have to see how this 2nd push of the 3DS pans out. My guess is it's still not going to be successful and they'll need to move on with a new plan.

I would agree with you on all parts.

Nintendo, please just release some games that make people shit their pants - Just bring the fucking fun WOO WOOOOOOOOO!!

I'm perfectly happy w/ my 3DS. Maybe because I don't have that much time or desire to play video games all the time....but the few hours a week I spend w/ my 3DS, I really enjoy it. No regrets here.

Hell, i wish they'd do more remakes of games w/ 3D makeovers. Why is Sega bothering w/ a crappy farmed out "new" Shinobi? Just "3Dify" Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon, Sonic Adventure, etc ....I'd buy all that shit! :)

Careful what you wish for. The 3D Frogger in the works doesn't impress me (based on the one video I've seen)

3D Jet Set Radio would be the mad bomb, yo.

Apple owns the market now fella's :)

+1 here too.

The Gameboy was technically poo, and the original screen was awful - but it had the killer app of Tetris, and has one of the best exclusive games of all time on it: Pokemon. Nintendo have intentionally only released versions of the core game exclusively for their handhelds, witholding a full-blown version of Pokemon for consoles, because they know this game alone is enough to sell handhelds.

Look at the Lynx - that could do some pretty impressive things for its time, handheld or not. Just a shame it was let down in the sucking batteries department.

Some of the best games don't need technical wizardry. Some amazing technically simple but deep games on handhelds... Advance Wars, for example.

I played it at E3. It's a piece of shit...but so are all the "new" Frogger games. I'm not talking about ground up remakes of old franchises...I'm saying - just take some solid older games...as they were...make them 3D. I'm really enjoying Zelda and Rayman in 3D...they look awesome. Sega's got a lot of great games that not a lot of people were exposed to, due to the "failure" of Saturn and short life of the Dreamcast.

It may be hypocritical after bashing Nintendo for all the re-releases but I'd actually be all over some of the aforementioned Dreamcast ideas. Those would be sweet.

Back to the original topic.
I'm glad that many are having some of the same thoughts with regards to the 3ds and Nintendo. I agree that Nintendo is a corporation, in business to make money and, thus, could probably care less about all of us once we leave the store. I would not call myself a Nintendo fanboy but I do have a special place in my heart for the brand since I have such fond memories of the NES and Gameboy. Kinda like I continue to pull for ATARI to right the ship, even though its current incarnation has nothing (but a name) to do with the company of Bushnell, Alcorn, et al. They're a company I've known and enjoyed(to varying degrees) for a long time and I suppose that I just feel disappointed. I don't know where it was written but I read an article recently about Nintendo, and its problems, and the author boiled it down to many of the same points that we are discussing here. Importantly, one of the biggest points made was that what has hurt Nintendo most over the last few years hasn't been the PSP, or the HD consoles, or the iPhone/iPad.....it's been Wii Fit, and Wii Music, and Nintendogs and all of the other NON-GAMES that this once great and innovative GAME COMPANY is now associated with. They're going to have to show me something to win me back, as a fan and customer.

Truth is...I think that the 3ds will actually come out of 2011 in pretty good shape. The Vita has been pushed back until early 2012 and this will leave the holiday season Nintendo's for the taking. They are rolling out the big guns, as we all know. And yes we all know that Mario, Mario Kart, etc.. are just "more of the same" from Nintendo. But they also happen to be "more of the same" that PRINT MONEY. I've heard that SONY pulled back the release of Vita to insure that they have a substantial launch lineup of games ready to go on day one from first and third parties. What a good thing. Makes me want to pre-order and play that system. I hope that this move, if true, which is in the best interest of gamers doesn't hurt the sale of Sony's handheld. If it does, or it lags behind, or gets smoked by Mario, and Nintendogs and Brain Age.....well, lets just say that you better get used to more launch lineups of Steel Diver, and Rayman (a F'n Dreamcast/PS one port), and Asphalt 3D.

Thanks for keeping hope, and this thread alive.....Its a fun and cathartic discussion.

Oh...and one last thing.

I don't think that the arrival of iOS or Android means the death of handheld consoles or console gaming at all. They have introduced the idea that some games should cost a dollar, some should cost ten bucks and sometimes its actually worth spending 50 or 60 on a game. I think that the portable that wins, and ultimately the portable model that will win, will allow the user the choice to play a 99 cent game or a 50 dollar game and everything in between. Oh and make sure that it can do other things too...like web/facebook, skype, AR, GPS, read books, etc.

Lets face it...sometimes you want to play a thoroughly engrossing experience and other times you might want to stack cakes. You know....maybe you're feeling Fruit Ninja or Angry Birds while other times you may be on more of a Last Story/ Xenosaga kick.....oh...wait....suck it Nintendo!!!
