3D question

Oryk,

Can the wiring on the glasses not be spliced in to the existing connecor on the cabinet or is this "converter" required?

By coincidence a local collector bought a Continental Circuit machine and is having it shipped in. I asked him if I could experiment on the 3D effects and he gave me the go ahead. So I bought a pair of these:

They arrived yesterday and appear to use a standard 3 wire phone jack. I ran down to Radio Shack and bought a female jack with solder points (pn: 274-274) so I can build the converter. Now I just need to see what the connector on the machine looks like so I can finish wiring up the glasses. I'll post my findings here after testing.

You should be able to splice the wiring, I am just building the adaptor because I feel it will be cleaner. Can you take a picture of the cabinet connector for me?

Ockey Dokey, here's a couple of pics:

That's me. NAVL's online tracking was down for a few days but it's coming back up now, and it shows my Continental Circuit upright arrived at their Tacoma terminal today. So I expect delivery at my place as early as Thursday.

Regarding "Circuit" vs. "Circus" in the title, I found this in the latest (0.138) MAME history file:

"Like Nintendo's 1981 classic, "Donkey Kong", Continental Circus was the victim of a mistake during the translation from Japanese to English. The game was originally to be called 'Continental Circuits'. All the artwork on the US games was later corrected to say 'Continental Circuit' but the original Taito PCBs are clearly labeled with the epithet, 'Circus'. Note: F1 is often called the 'F1 circus' because it is like a big circus that travels to different cities across different continents.

Continental Circus was unique at the time in that certain cabinets came supplied with a '3D visor', through which the player viewed the action. The visor, similar in outward appearance to the one used in Atari's "Battlezone", produced a simple but effective 3D effect. This effect could be disabled by the arcade operator via the dip switch settings.

This game was released outside U.S. 2 years later (in 1989)."

BTW, I forgot to add I also have the wiring diagram that came with my cab if you need help figuring out which wires are which.

OK, I know what that connector is. Can you tell me which wires go where? Either the actual signal or just the harness connector positions. There is an online pinout, I just don't have anything to match it to...

I thought I had the matching male connector I got from Bob Roberts a while back but looks like I got ganked. Might need to hard wired it in/ Do you know a place besides Bob where I can buy this connector Oryk?

As far as wiring goes, it shows B-W being Ground (probably black/white), Red-White being Lens Right and White-Brown being Lens Left, these being right on the connector pins themselves.

Hope that helps :)

I'd double-check a non-mall radio shack just to see, for some reason I think they have them.

If not I prob have a couple somewhere with some leads on em.

Yeah, I will check a local electronics store. (Sayal Electronics) I'm sure they have something. And Oryk, I am sure you will be testing the glasses way before me as I am still waiting for them but let me know how you make out :)

I don't think they have the 3 position connector like that, but Radio Shack does have a 4 position, which you could probably cut down to size ( http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103250 )... or at least just crimp/heatshrink the pins individually, and then tape (until your next order when you can get the correct plastic housing).

Ended up finding the connector at Sayal so all I need now are the damn glasses.

Oryk, when you are testing out the glasses, do you mind telling me if the steering in this gentlemen's cab is a full 360 or 270 degrees? Mine has a 360 wheel but I am trying to put on a 270 (the one that springs back to center) as I believe that's what originally the game came with since it has two connectors on the steering wiring harness. One for center detect and one for left / right. Unfortunately I have tried 2 happ assembly's with various optical steering pcb's followed by rewiring the connector and so far no luck plus the fact I have not been able to find additional info on the web related to the topic, doesn't help either.

Thanks :)

We'll know tomorrow night. I just got a call from NAVL and my Continental Circuit upright is being delivered sometime tomorrow.

It arrived this morning. I had time to give it a quick visual inspection and sign for it before I had to head back to work. Didn't even have time to plug it in.

I did check the steering wheel though. It turns almost 360 degrees in each direction. [EDIT: Nope, got that wrong. It turns 360 degrees from stop to stop. That is, 180 degrees from center to left stop and 180 degrees from center to right stop.] It does have stops though, meaning it will not spin endlessly in one direction or the other. Well, it will, but not freely. By that I mean the wheel will turn past the stop with a little pressure. Not sure it's supposed to do that, but it does not feel like the wheel is broken at all.

I'm out with a friend tonight but hope to fire it up when I get home around 9:30-10:00pm.

SanTe,

If it's not too much trouble, could you please snap a couple of photos of the steering assembly and it's corresponding connectors and post them here?

Thanks
