Not sure if any of you guys will be able to help me but I basically picked up a racing game that uses 3D. Upon poking around inside the cab I noticed there is a connector where the 3D glasses hook into to. Problem is it is virtually impossible to find these glasses. As a matter of fact I don't even know what they look like. When I played the game at my local arcade it was set to 2D with no glasses so my question is, will a normal set of 3D glasses work with the game? The game is Continental Circuit by Taito.

Thanks

I am certainly no expert on 3D graphics but the 3D lens looks unusual to me. It is labeles as an LCD asembly, implying that it is lighted in some way in order to create teh 3D effect...

Thanks for the help Oryk. At least your findings rule out the possibility of regular 3D glasses.

I found a set of LCD glasses on eBay but not sure how to wire them up or if they would even work.

This page describes how they work. I have seen this type of glasses before.

The manual for the game shows a simple connector to the glasses. The exploded diagram doesn't appear to show anything that would control the glasses flutter rate, so I would assume it is controlled by the PCB via the power connection. I don't know if they will work, but I would consider buying a set of these, since they are so cheap, and see how they do.

I suppose I could try them. They are cheap enough, I just don't know how I would wire them in to the existing connector on the cab since it's a 2 pin plug. These glasses seemn to have only one wire coming from them.

Most likely that single wire is a coax of some type with two wires internally. You will either have to cut the wire or build a dongle (adaptor) to make it fit. Personally, I would build the dongle so I can swap the wires around in order to try different options.

Sounds like a plan. I'll pick up a set and see what happens. Your're right though, not very expensive so no harm done if they don't work.

Thanks for all the help Oryk.

Be sure and report your findings. Sure, these aren't original but they may be useful for people in the future trying to repair their original 3D equipment or people just looking for the 3D experience...

I do a lot of 3D stuff... what kinda connector is on the board? The auction doesn't state what connector is on the glasses, but there's two common ones... there's one with a headphone looking plug, and one that looks more like a PS/2 plug. The headphone style is more common with the older shutter glasses systems... the other is more common with the newer ones from the PC VR fad days of the mid 90s.

I actually saw a Continental Circuit at an auction that they said "was broken with a monitor problem", but looking at it, I could tell the flickering screen was meant for 3D shutter glasses (pretty cool IMO). I was definitely tempted to pick it up (since it went really cheap), but I'm sure the cool factor would go away quickly, and then I'd just have a mediocre game taking up space :p .

But yeah... there's really not much to LCD shutter glasses... those glasses in the auction should work just fine, though you might need to put a different connector on to match your board.

Thanks for the help and advice guys. The conector on the game is actually tied into the wiring harness from the speakers, it looks like a cathedral window type if that makes sense that hangs down in between the speakers and looking at the wiring diagram that came with the machine, the glasses hook there.

Again, I will give it a go and report my findings :)

I just had a look at the plug inside the cabinet and it has 3 wires. I though it had 2. One is ground and the other two are for left and right lenses according to the wiring manual. How many wires are typically found in these glasses with PS/2 or headphone type wiring?

I remember the sega master system with these were really cool. The best 3d effect I have ever seen was on the missile game with the gun.

Thanks guys. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it works. Never played the game in 3D and it looks like it could be a neat experience.

By coincidence a local collector bought a Continental Circuit machine and is having it shipped in. I asked him if I could experiment on the 3D effects and he gave me the go ahead. So I bought a pair of these:

They arrived yesterday and appear to use a standard 3 wire phone jack. I ran down to Radio Shack and bought a female jack with solder points (pn: 274-274) so I can build the converter. Now I just need to see what the connector on the machine looks like so I can finish wiring up the glasses. I'll post my findings here after testing.
