3 Year Joust Restoration Nears Completion

You must have gotten stenciling inspiration from Frizz's latest Taito thread, no? Looks nice. His looked amazing when it was done. Did he give you pointers?

He only gave me one. He said to me: "Have someone else do the work and then claim half the credit." Wise man.

I got one side polished up with Turtle wax this morning. Man it looks clean. Thanks for the compliments everyone.

The paint I used for the base was a satin oil "All Surface Enamel" from Sherwin Williams. The color was "Turkish Coffee". The black was a Rustoleum oil-based Semi-Gloss Black.

Cool. I think the gloss looks good on my Stargate, but Joust wouldn't look as good in gloss. What you did turned out really well.

Did you get it custom mixed in oil at a Sherwin Williams store? I've yet to try that. I don't know that Lowes or HD will even custom mix quarts in oil anymore here. The oil I've sprayed has been the off the shelf RustOleum quarts.

I have so far had 3 custom colors mixed up in all surface enamel. Moon Patrol Blue, Gorf Blue and Joust Brown. I brought in swatches from other paint manufacturers and they color matched them with the 2 blues, the Turkish Coffee was an off the shelf color from them.

Finally an update! I got my new MW bezel unwrapped (Thanks Tanman, these are GORGEOUS!!!), tried to get my control panel put together (still need to wire it up and add 4 buttons), replaced the speaker panel, found and installed the marquee I'd been storing for 3 years and began the wiring process. The first Jamma harness I tried didn't produce any sound from the speaker outputs, I had video and controls, but the speaker outputs produced nothing. I tried another one (fully loaded from Bobby), and sure enough, I have sound now. Weird. This other harness was also new, and I *think* I purchased it from MTZArcade when he was selling all those NOS Williams/Jamma harnesses about 4 years ago. I have another one sitting here and I will see if it produces the same result on my next jamma project. There are 2 other things that have sucked so far:

1. The 3/32" T-molding lip on the outside cab edge. No matter what I do, or where I look, I notice it. I have never had this width issue before, all my other 3/4 cabs' t-molding fits flush. Annoying.

2. The f-ing Arcade Shop MW CP. There are little nipples sticking up on this thing from all the stud heads under the CPO (even after bondoing and sanding), the worst one being directly in front of the panel, where the stud itself had come loose from the panel. It sticks out and is noticeable in the right light and bugs me. It also spins when you try to tighten the nut underneath, so I can't get it any tighter. The worst part is, it seems to serve no purpose. I have an original Joust panel here, and there are no studs, bolts or screws in that area. Maddening.

Anyhoo, here are some pics of the cab as it sits now:

It's coming along quite well!! Your stencil jobs never cease to amaze me. Not trying to be a prick, but is the blue joystick 4 inches and the other stick 3 inches?

Yep. If you can find me a 3.5 inch light blue-balled shaft, I'll buy it from you.

Looks great, but I'd go with a Joust bezel. That MW bezel sticks out like a sore thumb.

I tried to find a nice original, then these MW bezels popped up for a discounted price. I went with it and like it just fine. If I ever found a NICE Joust bezel, I may change it out, but for now it stays.

Did you check with Wu on here?

That's where I got this 4" light blue one from. The problem is, I don't want the 4 inchers. They're too high for a metal CP. They also seem sloppier because they have a lower pivot point. The yellow one is stiff as Fritz at Cub Scout Day Camp, while the blue one is looser than Fritz's mom after an all-night fisting from Big Foot. They both have the same base. Maybe I'll try spraying powder blue Krylon Fusion paint on one of my 3 pale yellow 3.5" shafts.

i figured they work, my bad! i have a joust cab here, mine has dark blue and orange sticks in it.
