3 Year Joust Restoration Nears Completion

Spraying is easier, that's for sure. I am new at it though, so most of my rolled restorations look smoother than my recent sprayed ones. I'll dial it in as I go. Spraying is also a little more nerve wracking than rolling.

Look in to Floetrol... add about 20% to your paint and it smooths out everything...even if you use a brush with it it will smooth out the brush marks...

Floetrol is for water-based paints. I use oil-based paints exclusively and use Penetrol, which is the oil-equivalent of Floetrol. It gave me the pebbling I spoke of on the first coat, which is why I switched to Mineral Spirits. Penetrol works well for rolling, but didn't work as well when spraying.

Ah... never mind then...

:)

When spraying oil based, I cut the mix with acetone. Just make sure you have plenty of ventilation. The acetone works well to allow the drops to blend and then evaporates off fast to avoid pebbling.

Sounds like a plan for next time. Man that stuff can kill you though. Time to break out the rubber gloves and Michael Jackson mask.

Looks great! Nice job Phetty

Thanks Johnny Boy. I can't wait to get it all put together for the money shot. This cabinet has been empty ever since I got it, so I've never seen it decked out with all the accessories. BTB, you still looking for a Joust? Or have you abandoned that quest?

Well, I'd love to have a Joust! But I've been laying low on the buying end lately. Its painful sometimes to watch a lot of great games come and go, but that's the way it goes.

You gonna sell it when you're finished? I'm sure there be people waiting in line for it.....

Looks awsome! I've got a factory Robotron conversion, too, I wonder exactly how many Robotrons got their "make-overs" in the factory?

Thanks. Yeah it seems weird, as I thought Robotron was more popular than Joust BITD. Generally the game a manufacturer converted was less popular then the game they converted it to. Look at Lunar Lander to Asteroids or Radarscope to Donkey Kong. Robotron to Joust seems like kind of a backwards factory conversion if you ask me.

I am anxiously awaiting the money shot... Looks F'n fantastic so far!! I hate the way pulling paint up with a stencil feels. It hurts my heart. prOk always makes it better though. I must have a Joust now.

Thanks Greg, yeah the beauty of this one will be when it's all assembled. The marquee, bezel, cpo, coin doors, etc. add much needed flare to the earthy tones of the cabinet. Sometimes it's hard to see where you came from and where you went with it, so here are some quick before and after direct comparison shots for easier viewing:

Phet, looks amazing! So funny cause I have never seen a Joust where you can't see the plywood showing through. I wish they did what you do when they painted them originally!

I might have missed it, but what was the sheen of the brown, red, etc..?

What about the black you used on the front/top?

It turned out great!! The paint just looks right.

You must have gotten stenciling inspiration from Frizz's latest Taito thread, no? Looks nice. His looked amazing when it was done. Did he give you pointers?
