I was working on a friends stellar wars last night trying to figure out why 3 drop targets in different locations are not registering. I found that all components share the same wire. I traced it back to the cpu and found that pin is not kicking out any voltage. All other pins on that connector are working properly.
The game was recently repaired and a Rottendog Amusements cpu was installed...has a 1 year warranty. The wire in question is on the very top...gray and white. Any ideas?

Most likely it's not a problem at the CPU, but it's probably the playfield wiring that has a problem. Check every switch that shares that particular wire, and look for a bad connection in there.

Are any switches off of that pin registering? or just those three are bad?

A few switches behind the rubbers are not working either. Same wire. I pulled the connector off, booted the game and still no voltage out of that pin. Thanks

Have you checked the wire continuity from the cpu board connector to the switches?

I will do that next. Question is... if its not throwing volts to the switches, how are the 'return' wires going to be of any use?
Thanks I appreciate your expertise and help.

Touchee!

Never worked on a Rottendog board before, not sure how to do diagnostics on them. particularly with no schematics available.

Williams drop targets (of that era) not registering is a common problem. There's little circuit boards mounted to the back of each target...the wipers on these boards get dirty. Carefully take each board off the drop target assemble and clean. Be careful....each board is daisy chained together with diodes and wires. It's easy to break one loose. Also, don't tighten the circuit boards' screws too tight. They are easy to strip. They only screw into plastic.
