3 game haul tommorrow

As stated in my Paperboy thread, it is working 100% now.

This evening I installed a new pot in the Outrun, and it is working 100% too. After adjusting the monitor a bit more, it has a great picture just like the Paperboy.

I'm still waiting on the Badlands PCB.

After some deliberation, I decided to go with these grips:

My wife and I aren't really all that fond of the stock grips, and they need replaced anyways - they have turned green from sun exposure.

I did find some sweet looking blue/yellow checkered grips on ebay, but when the seller outright says "keep your expectations low to be happy", I decided to pass.

Those look pretty cool and I think the blue will look good.

That's sweet about getting it running. I'm pumped for you, and can't wait to play that Paperboy! This purchase should work out pretty good for you, assuming you didn't blow a fortune in your parts buying frenzy the first few days after the haul. ;)

Mother fu*$! I finally got the Badlands PCB in this afternoon, and it has 2 busted ceramic caps near the top. Obviously it is not going to work like that. I am in the process of writing the ebay seller now. I documented opening the package with my camera. This is what I am writing to him:

Got the package this afternoon. I picture documented opening the package, and then looked over the pcb. Unfortunately, there are 2 busted caps as noted in picture "Badlands5". You can also see them if you zoom in on "Badlands4" to verify it is in fact the same board. There is no evidence that the board was damaged in shipping, and there is zero debris in the shipping materials (the missing broken cap).

I am hesitant to plug this board into my setup to test its functionality. Either way, I doubt it can be 100% functional missing these 2 caps.

I defer to you as to the course of action.

1: I can send it back under warranty.
2: I have a spare non-working board that I can rob the caps from and replace them. Then I can test the board. If it works, then no harm/no foul. If it still doesn't work, then refer to plan #1.

Obviously I don't want to screw with the board without your approval. Please let me know whichever path you are comfortable with.

Thanks

I think I am more than civil. I've waited 2 weeks, and will be out return shipping to California if I have to return it. I seriously doubt the seller will foot the bill for return shipping.

If the seller is a KLOV member, then nothing personal dude. I'm not trying to out you or anything - I'm just frustrated that it will still be a while before I can get my game up and running. I doubt this is the case though, since no one has chimed in after I mentioned I bought the board on ebay.

Seller is cool about it. I'll replace the caps and test. If it works, he'll refund me the bid amount. If it doesn't then he'll refund the full amount.

I actually picked up an outrun bezel on epay for mine for a decent price... the problem with doing that is you might end up without the map!

And OOHHHH YYYYEEAAAHHH OR is one heavy, awkward, PITA of a cabinet ... I think sega saw how atari was making cabs adn decided they had to one-up them!

nice score!
cheers

Out Run was built by Dynamo for Sega. They used high density MDF on all of the game with the exception of the floor of the cab. It might actually be plywood.

Got the grips in today. I had to cut off the original grips. I tried to put the new ones on dry at first...that doesn't work too well! I had to put in a rush order to Phet and get some of his world famous Phaggy Phetty lube to get the job done properly. With the proper lubrication they went on well.
They look 100x better than the green sun worn original ones. They are also much more comfortable. The blue is almost a dead ringer for the blue HS screen in-game. Both mine and the wive's scores immediately improved by several thousand on easy street. This was definitely a worth-while $9 investment!

Hairspray works to get the new grips on too. Spray it into the grip, slide it on the game and it will stick pretty damn well after the spray dries.

Some pics of new grips. Cell phone pics, so they look like crap of course. In the second pic, you can see that the original grips are anything but blue. On the inside they were a very similar shade of blue to the new ones.

I finally got to replace the caps on the Badlands board last night. After replacing the killed switcher in my Xevious cab and verifying voltages, I plugged her in. I was presented with a working image. Very cool!

Now I just have to rebuild the monitor chassis, fix a pedal, and put it all back together.

I put mushroom grips on mine:

Something I do on my ATV's. Wrap grip area on handle bars with electrical tape. Spray electrical taped area with carb cleaner and shoot carb cleaner in the grips. Slide the grips on and let dry over night.

The carb cleaner has a checmical reaction with the electrical tape causing a gooey mess. The stuff sets up and your grips aren't going any where

So how do you like Badlands? I've never played it on a real cabinet, just in MAME. Glad it's working now. Do you still have any of those switchers left? I still need to pick one up for my 720-never-ending-project.

I plugged it into my Xevious cab, so all I could do was drive in a straight line and shoot bullets. :)

Having went back and played C. Sprint, I can see why people complain about the size of the tracks - they are significantly smaller. The visual design and interaction of the track is better though - they're just smaller.

Yep, I have a few switchers. I'll throw one in my car for you.

Hehe... well let us know when the cabinet with steering wheels is up and running. :)

Cool on the switcher... need to remember to grab that next time I see you. It's just so easy to ignore the 720 when it's out of sight, out of mind...
