3 game haul tommorrow

Don't sweat the paperboy, probably just blew a fuse. There might be one right where the cord comes in on the back of the cabinet.

I might have a steering pot that will work for the Outrun. Pull it and get a picture if you can. I can't help with the gear, but I was thinking someone made new repros because even the unbroken ones are brittle? Someone here will know.

Can't wait to see pics!!!

Pic time! Note that the Outrun and Badlands are complete - I just swapped the monitor from the badlands into the paperboy.

As you can see, the outrun bezel has been JB welded or something. I need to sand that down and repaint it...probably won't ever get around to it though.

The paperboy controlled is wobbly. I am assuming the weld is busted like another guy's on byoac I saw. Haven't had a chance to tear it apart yet.

Badlands cab is okay, but the bottom had water damage and mold.

And another note, Outrun is HEAVY!!!! What the hell is it made of - hardwood!!! That is the heaviest cab I have ever moved. The badlands is about the lightest I have moved.

More pics...stupid pic limit...

You can see where the upper part of Outrun is busted. Looks like it was shoddily repaired once before.

I added a pic of my Narc to show of the minty fresh bright red T-molding I recently installed. It makes the game look so much better.

Hmm, I'll have to look again for another fuse. There is a standard AC line fuse in a capped holder on the power supply - it appeared to be good. I need to test it with the multimeter.

Does anyone have an idea why the Video board would not be getting power (led not lit)? Especially since the wiring goes right to the switching supply's +5 line verified to be right on the money?

And Wade, if you really think you want the Paperboy, you can still have it. I made a judgement call that it was well below your standards. It also has light water damage on the bottom 3-4". You just have to let Michelle have first dibs on playing it. She wants to play that one really bad!

I actually picked up an outrun bezel on epay for mine for a decent price... the problem with doing that is you might end up without the map!

And OOHHHH YYYYEEAAAHHH OR is one heavy, awkward, PITA of a cabinet ... I think sega saw how atari was making cabs adn decided they had to one-up them!

nice score!
cheers

Okay, I just have to say it - that B gear is the biggest rip-off I have ever seen. Seriously people, it an effing small cog! Why does it have to cost so much!

I just realized I came to a major milestone today - I counted the coin op games in my gameroom and the magic number was 10! Yes, I am officially in double digits.

And do you want to know the best part? These magical words escaped my wife's lips:
"You know, they all actually fit out here. It totally works."

Hahaha... I'm still waiting for these words from my wife. She's come close to completely admitting she likes the hobby but then I mention the next game I want to pick up and she gets overwhelmed again. :) But, she did insist that I do not sell my Playchoice cab because "that's the only one I know how to play".

She was fully in support of this 3 game purchase. I couldn't get her off of the pc last night where she was playing Badlands. I hope I can get that one up and running fairly quickly.

After doing some research, it looks like the ARIII is my problem on the paperboy (assuming the fact that plugging in the marquee and killing all power to the cab can be rectified). I've seen several members report almost the exact same issue.
Switcher is putting out clean +5, and CPU board has lit LED. Bottom video board has no power.

Question: Where do I take measurements on the ARIII/video board. Are ARIII boards rebuildable, and if so, which parts are likely to fail on it.

I'm sure the AR3 boards are rebuildable. I would have to check the manual to know for sure, but if the AR3 can keep it from running you can try mine (2). I was thinking the AR3 wasn't required for the game to run, just for sound, but I could be wrong.

If you had a white screen originally, then I'd say the hardest part is over. If you had a dead monitor and bad PCB's then it might be pricey to fix. Sounds like at least your monitor is working, you might even get lucky on the PCB's. :)

Your judgement call was right... besides, I told you to have at it. I knew they were going to be projects and you know how I'm trying to steer clear of projects. That Paperboy does look pretty beat, but fixable. Vinyl is pretty cheap and easy to apply, but the water damage has me a little concerned. Michelle might make you keep it!! ;)

I was up until 4am doing research the other night. I've seen several folks with paperboys that had similar - in some cases exact - problems I am having. From what I read, the ARIII generates the 5 volts for the video board. The CPU gets its 5 volts directly from the installed switcher. If anyone can confirm/dispute that, then have at it.

Bob Roberts sells an ARIII rebuild kit.

That could be the case, my System 2 knowledge is pretty spotty at this point. Want me to grab both of those AR3's? I will probably run home for lunch and could get them then, and you could get them some time this afternoon if you wanted, or I might be able to meet you around quitting time. I'm pretty sure the one works okay since one 720 PCB set boots and plays, it just has garbled 3D graphics.

That would be sweet. also, I got you a pic of the steering pot, but I left it at home. It's just a 5k pot. I don't think there is anything too special about it.

Tell me about it!
Supply and demand is the answer... The B gear in my outrun is also cracked, but it has a hose clamp around it holding everything together :)

After testing of the Badlands pcb went horribly wrong, I have been debating whether to just MAME that cabinet. I really think I have moved past MAME into dedicated territory, because the thought making another MAME cab makes me sick to my stomach.

My deliberations were answered though by finding a Badlands board on ebay with a return guarantee for cheap.

Fingers crossed that I can get a working game!

720 doesn't use an AR3. After Paperboy, Atari got smart and used a switcher to power the 5V for the CPU and Video boards.

Not sure how much current the ARII puts out. I'd use a known good switcher to power both boards for testing. I believe the ones that came with Paperboy have a really low current rating. IIRC, the other voltages from the AR3 are just used for Sounds and High Score, but I'd have to double check.
