Client asked me to come take a look at his Gauntlet Dark Legacy cabinet because he doesn't fool with monitors. Client turned out to be "Coindropper" who apparently bought this pretty nice cabinet from "Bottlejunkie" for a good price. Monitor apparently was super dark (even adjusted to max) and worked intermitently.

So I open it up, check the power coming in and listen for anything from the monitor chassis. Nothing, nadda, no neck glow, but the power coming in checks out. I run some checks on the tube with my B&K 470, no shorts but the red color gun is reading bad. Cleaned and Balanced all the guns and now everything had a good reading and didn't require color tracking. So I pull the chassis out and inspect for dry solder joints.......someone had reflowed it in the past and left a lot of the greasy looking burnt solder flux everywhere, but otherwise everything looks ok. So I start running checks on fuses, diodes, the larger resistors responsible for no power ups and dark screens. Everything appears to be fine, so I go to desolder the HOT and run checks. Shorted across one leg......was thinking flyback may also be responsible for a lot of things.

So right now I've ordered a new flyback and HOT (C3688) from Bob Roberts.

Any input? Suggestions to what may be causing the dark screen?
This board seems to have the required upgrades to hardware.

Which leg of the HOT was shorted? It normally reads as shorted between the outside legs, but that's normal (even out of circuit). You can pick up the NTE equivalent at Fry's. I doubt the flyback is bad...

Well until I get the parts in I'll see if it was or not. I gotta at least get a picture on the screen before I can try anything else. I know the troubleshooting guide from Wells Gardner has a few notes on a dark screen, but I checked most of the components it listed except for the transformers and maybe 1 transistor. Would that odd looking small board with the 2 pots plugged in the middle of the chassis have anything to do with the screen's brightness?

Get this, well my attempt to fix this failed. We did gauge a response from replacing the flyback and HOT with a crummy picture, but it only lasted for 5 minutes.

My boss suggests to send it to AllGoodUSA to get it repaired. I send it out, they fix it and charge like $75 total, and then ship it back. I get out there today and install it, turn it on with no picture.....reach for the flyback and turn up the brightness and theres a picture. I get it all nice and pretty but it seems the width pot on the remote board isn't working. Then monitor looked like it hated me adjusting the width knob and the picture jumped upwards for a second but returned to normal. Then it up and dies, we get a clicking noise....probably high voltage shutdown or it somehow blew the HOT again!? Anyways, AllGoodUSA provides 60 day parts and labor warranty so I need to send them word and send it right back there way.......

cursed this cabinet me believes....
