23 Free CRT monitors ....... Would you take them?

NewSherrifInTown and I went back to our honey hole. Not much left, but we had promised to take all of his extra monitors for free and dispose of them.

Ended up with 23 of them. No idea if any work. 3 or 4 have terriffic burn but the rest seem fine.

So would you have taken them?

Let's say I have to re-cap them all, maybe new hots and flybacks. Looking at about $40-$50 in parts + time on every one of them. Are they worth putting that much time and effort into them? I mean honestly the tubes could be bad, yokes bad, electron guns shorted, etc.

What would you have done?

I'd have taken them depending on price. If you have a couple left by the time SFGE comes around, I'll take a couple off your hands as is.

Hell, yeah I'd take them!

(It sounds like it was free/part of past deal and your disposing of them for the person?)

Of course. But I'm asking more of a what would you do if they were offered to you?

Test.

Sort/catalog use (for me) of working ones.

Possible fixes, set those aside.

Part outs, get parts.

If you than have more than you need, sell what you don't need. Don't waste your time fixing it.

If you have some "turds" then pair the turds with some of the better stuff you are selling and reduce price.

Personally.... I would likely keep them all. :)

So would you have taken them?

Only if they were all free or $5~10 each. And they would have to be all 13"-20", nothing
larger then that. Games later then 1980's using larger monitor are junk. Nobody wants to
deal with 25" or 27" or any of those heavy useless jumbo things. Burn 'em all! :)

And they would have to be B&W, color raster (standard or medium) or vector (B&W or color).

So many conditions! One man's garbage is another man's treasure! Carpe Diem! #YOLO

Nonetheless, you're doing him a service by getting rid of 23 big junk items. And he's doing
you a favor if any/all/most work with some recaps/troubleshooting. etc. it's all about time.

If any tubes were beyond repair, the chassis' are always good inventory for repairs/parts...

nope, too much work, if just 1 or 2 I would, but 23? That just crazy!

People buy dead monitors all the time so if you have a way to store them for a few weeks (I guess that's key) why not take them and blow them out to locals for peanuts? Really any option is better than seeing them go directly to the landfill :/

If they were offered to me for free I'd borrow a trailer and grab them and then work out a deal with paul400 where I would drop them off for free and ask for two or three rebuilt ones in return :p.

Peep's are always looking for 25" Wells for their Mortal Kombal cabs these days. I've had no problem selling/trading/giving away extra 25 inch monitors in recent years. Ten years ago however no one wanted them at all...

I store them and have a catalog of what I have in case I need something. Having something on hand like a monitor is a blessing.

Looking at the bigger picture.......a few years from now, this may not even possible. Finding 23 in one deal is a treasure for some of us. Don't second guess this. Take them and help out the cause. Restorations need all the help out there in the form of original parts. I think I said enough. Thanks for helping!

I see 4 25" k7000's on there. If they have bad burn, do a tube swap.

I would keep any go7, wells, or Nintendo monitors. Toss the off brands

I ended up with about 60 tubes & frames from a similar situation. The chassis were mostly shot, but tubes generally don't go bad. Not enough room to store them, can't get the locals to take a few each, so they get abused by the elements. One day I will have to start "disposing" of them. Kinda sad, because they aren't being made any more, but I am not going to ship them. Have put out "free - please take them" but all I get is "do you have tube XXXX and have you tested it and what were the color gun strengths and do you have a picture..." Heck, if I did all that, wouldn't be able to give them away for free. Maybe that is the road I will have to take eventually. <sigh>
