I just picked up a Donkey Kong today (my first real arcade cab). It's pretty rough in general, but has potential. The monitor was rolling and waving when I got it and I was able to get it to hold and display a decent picture. Now some items on the screen are doubled. I'm wondering if this is a monitor issue or something on the DK pcb?

yup the grafix errors are a PCB problem.

you also need to get that monitor and chassis a re-work.

i suspect it has never had any work done to it.

it needs caps and a good re-flow to start.

if you need parts i have them.

if you need it fixed, your welcome to send it in.

Peace

Thanks Buffet. I do have a cap kit on the way and have watched your video on how to remove the chassis from the frame. I feel confident that I can handle installing the new caps. Not sure where to start with the graphix errors. I've been listening, reading and watching a ton leading up to my first purchase. but I am not prepared for PCB issues.

you start with socketed chips. depending on the environment the game was in you probably have a few plastered in corrosion. which you would gently sand off.

definately start with what Mecha said about pulling all socketed chips and cleaning all their legs and reseat/reinstall the chips and report back. if you need parts or eproms i have thousands in stock and i can burn them for you too. www.arcadepartsandrepair.com

this is a tough chassis to do a cap kit on if its your first time. be careful there is alot of things you need to disconnect, make sure you mark where everything goes back, you can burn up your chassis and pcb if not hooked back correctly.

cool, glad you liked the video.

take your time on the cap kit.

DON'T use too much heat and be sure not to bridge any solder joint.

if you get into any trouble STOP!!!!!! and ask a question.

if you feel overwhelmed in the process, STOP and send it in.
extra non needed damage can be/is more expensive to repair.

Good luck!!

New cap kit and B+ from Ian successfully installed. Also a new fly back. Yes, I shot gunned it. Graphic issues to be determined. Buffet, your video gave me the extra push that I needed to get this done. Thanks!

Swapped out all of the graphic eproms and still have the same problem. Ian mentioned that it could be a bad address decoder IC. How do I check that?

Can some anyone confirm what I should be seeing on pin 12 of 8H (it's an LS273)? My logic probe shows it high, but not pulsing. I compared it to my DK JR board, and that pin pulses rapidly. I think they should be doing the same thing!? I'm hoping this chip is the source of my graphics issue.
