Hello,

Bought a DK3 a while back and was told when I bought it that the monitor had vertical collapse. Thanks to quite a few posts here, (specifically the flow chart) I ordered the replacement parts, and did a cap kit as there were some swollen caps.

The issue i'm having is when I bought it, it was already disassembled, so I couldn't take some pics of where everything connected before I started my work.

I've got all the new components in, and believe I have everything connected where it should be as most of the connectors are labeled. I'm running into a bit of an issue with the board that is mounted on top of the flyback and where those connectors go.

Does someone have a few pics of their assembled monitor that I can crib off of for the connections?

Thanks,
Ace

Just be careful on the audio board connections. Nintendo/Sanyo did pretty well in that everything can pretty much only plug into where it is intended to go..... except for the audio board. You can reverse the connections on the audio pot and the other connector that is identical.

DONT DO IT ! MAKE SURE IT IS RIGHT !

(don't ask me how I know :-( )

You will send ~100V or so down into your game board on the game board's audio output line. Magic smoke from at least a resistor will follow.

I hate admitting that I did that.... but sometimes we all live and learn the hard way. I can guarantee you I'll never make that mistake again.

i had someone do that to their red donkey kong 4 board stack that they sent me for repair a few years ago. they plugged the audio in wrong and vaporized a couple of traces and components. i was alittle surprised it was contained to only about 4 components and two trace fixes on the sound pcb only to get it up and going again.

if you look at the audio plugs they are usually marked with two black letters that coincide with where they plug into the audio board and the audio pcb is marked usually too.

Appreciate the words of warning :)

Yeah..I'm pretty fortunate to have most of the connections retain the original stamps. My confusion was with 2 connectors, that aren't' labeled and have multiple places where they could plug in across different boards, as well as some of the plugs that don't require anything to be plugged into them...like the case with the invert (?) board that lives on top of the flyback cage.

if you post pictures of the connectors in question we can tell you where they go. the game pcbs have spots not used and but most can only go in one spot.

Well, did a cap kit and the transistors for vertical collapse and after getting it all back together I now have this. The black bars are actually white, that is actually the refresh showing through the camera. The damn picture has bee flipped. This is a vert monitor.

/sigh

turn down the screen pot on the flyback.

use my video to help you adjust the monitor.

check your video connection.
if your using the inverter, if you have it, don't use it.

run the video straight to the chassis.

Sweet! That helped a ton, now I have a picture at least. Thank you for that! It's all lines and duplicated about 5 times on the screen, but I can at least see it. I'll have to modify a cable for my TPG to see if it's a monitor issue or a board issue at this point me thinks.

The picture is the DK3 playfield in lines vertically , and duplicated 5ish times horizontally. Again, it rotated my picture when I upload it from my phone.

@iankellog - I'll check when I get home.

@buffett - PM Sent

I appreciate all your guys help...this is my first real attempt at numerous issues, so the willingness to help is much appreciated and at the very least rep will be thrown to everyone who's helped fo sho.

Welp....that was short lived...

I fired it up this evening and as I was getting ready to adjust the H-Hold pot i heard a pop, and the monitor went out.

I'm still getting power though, as it still plays blind, with sound.

I'll have to pull it back out again and see what it was. fuse looks intact (though I haven't done a continuity check on it yet)

how discouraging...

that sucks.

look over all your work and see if anything is out of place.

look for any fried/burnt parts.

check ALL the caps to be sure they are in the correct place, orientation and the correct value.

So,

I'm far from an expert, but I think I blew the HOT..as i'm getting a .002 reading from one of the legs.

Looks like i'll be placing another parts order soon.

if you're blowing the H.O.T. and there is no other shorted
parts, you may have a failing flyback
