Those ARE both interesting! Does magnetic centering mean it doesn't have a spring at all? I wonder how long the magnets would last...unless they're powered, electromagnets would not wear out would they?

After dealing with a Sony Monitor that was very sensative to magnetics, I would worry about getting anything with magnet even remotely close to the crt screen. It should be ok for if your running an LCD.

I just checked the datasheet for the magnetic stick, it is not electro-mechanical, just regular magnets, so no power is needed. I wonder if that means the magnets are constantly wearing even when your machine is off then, I wonder what kind of lifespan these have and how they compare to regular springed sticks.

I could be wrong, but I believe that magnets don't wear out.

This might be the same as the Ultimarc Mag-Stick. I *think* IL makes the Mag-Stick for Ultimarc, but I'm not certain.

Good point! I see the 8/4 way switch on the side. At least it is very similar. I wonder of Paradise Arcade (armi0024) can get it, he carries stuff from IL.

I am also very curious about that d-pad!

I just checked wikipedia cus I wasn't sure, but some magnets do lose their magnetism and others are permanent, so I assume they would make these out of permanent magnets. It would be interesting to get some of those super strong dionisium (spelling?) magnets in there to get a stiffer "spring" :D

I'm wondering how you would play that on a cab, because it would be mounted on a flat CP, you couldn't hold it very comfortably?

Yes permanent magnets are permanent :D I can't imagine they would anything but.

I certainly wouldn't use it for game play, but it could be useful with some games.

Has anyone tried this out? I'm curious to hear how well it works. I know this is a bit of a dead thread, but I just say this on the Bay and I was curious about it.

Where did you see them? I was thinking about asking Paradise (armi0024) if he could get them in since he buys from IL directly.

I have them, and I've used them. They have a VERY short throw, but they are kinda neat in that they can be adjusted from 4 to 8 way without reaching inside the panel. Just pull up on the handle, twist, and the restrictor plate rotates from one mode to another. Ultimarc calls them Mag Stiks.

IL may or may not have the 4/8 way switching mechanism on them, I'm not sure. But they feel the same to use - very short throw.

stix

short throw sounds good to me! thanks for the tip ultimarc mag sticks will be the ones I will look for. I like fast 4/8 switching on the fly..

i got one of the mag sticks and it was a piece of shit. one of the screw holes that held in the microswitch was stripped. i didnt care for the feel of it at all and it didnt seem accurate on the directions for 4 way use on pac man games, for instance. got a wico leaf switch stick from the 80s and havent looked back since. on other cabs i ususally use happ competition sticks. i do like ultimarcs pushbuttons and the ipac.

happ competition does seem like the best bet. I'm gonna go with those.

the HAPPs are copies of IL Eurosticks, buy them from Paradise Arcade Shop, they are cheap and you get Cherry microswitches with a color matched dust washer.

The HAPPs come with a black washer, zippy microswitcher (yuck) and the actuator is made from PVC instead of white nylon.
